As people whose professional work is grounded in truth-seeking, I hope this NABJ controversy inspires more relevation, soul-searching, and change in leadership. Whatever needs to come out for a deep reset and rebuilding, I hope it happens. Because this community is too important, especially to young Black journalists trying to find their way, to let it be ripped apart and reduced to entertainment for people who could care less.

Scoop: A source familiar with this potential @vp appearance at the NABJ convention says the @VP WILL NOT be attending the NABJ Convention in Chicago this week. A source familiar also says Harris is hitting the ground running as the new presumptive Democratic Nominee days into her campaign working through all of the necessary planning and attending the funeral of late Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. The source also says the Harris for President campaign team worked very closely with NABJ leadership to find an alternative option. The NABJ team unfortunately denied a request for the VP to take part in a fireside chat virtually, or to host an in person fireside chat with the VP at a later date.  Stay tuned to @theGrio for more on this story.

Let me add: My issue isn’t with Travis Kelce because he didn’t write this story nor has he ever claimed to invent this particular haircut. My issue is with the NYT for giving zero cultural context and failing to explain that fades have been popular for a very long time and it has a significant connection to Black culture.

The NYT thinks that Travis Kelce invented the fade 🤦🏾‍♀️ When you have zero cultural competency on your staff, this is how you end up with stories like this, and explaining swag surfin,’ which is at least 15 or years old.
