When it comes to female politicians sex matters. Numbers matter. Not because anyone wants to make a statement about gender ideology, but because for 40 years (inc the decade before 1999) Scottish women have been campaigning hard to get equality at Holyrood. We need to be able to count the number of females elected, to monitor progress. There are now 55 women and 74 men at Holyrood. Two of the male MSPs are trans-identified. This is a DROP in the number of female MSPs, from 58 in the last session (45% to 42.6%). Is it a blip that will be corrected in 2031 or is the start of a trend that needs attention? Either way, we need the data. It is a matter of concern that the government-funded national ‘feminist’ organisation Engender has chosen to play with the numbers and publish data that is contrary to the Supreme Court ruling that for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010, the terms “woman”, “man” and “sex” refer to biological sex, not acquired gender under a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) or that matter self ID. Luckily Scotland has very good grassroots women’s organisations that are keeping track - but they don’t get half a million pounds a year to do the work Engender should be doing. Women like @JohannLamont have spent their career fighting for political equality. It was thanks to them that the first session of the Scottish Parliament in 1999 saw 48 women elected (37%) - at the time one of the highest proportion of female representation in a legislature anywhere in the world. Women are 51% of the population. All parliaments should reflect that fact. Numbers matter. Sex matters.

@BrendaJ98869280 @jane_mclenachan @ReformUKScot I spoke to Jo at hustings pre Holyrood elections. Jo agreed sex is binary + matters but said (in response to my question re prisons) that it would be a case by case basis. Ideally a 3rd space but as that doesn’t exist some transwomen would be housed in female estate.

Yesterday @DalgetySusan you could find out how many female, male and non binary MSPs there were in the current session of the Scottish Parliament. Today that option has been removed. Why is that @ScotParl @scotgov? Would you rather eliminate everyone's sex rather than acknowledge reality

Seems you can no longer search for how many male or female MSPs we have on parliament.scot website. This lot will do ANYTHING to avoiding calling a man a man🤯

Last time we looked this wasn't in the remit of the @scotgov Is it too much to ask that our MSPs understand their role?

This is really important because only by categorising MSPs by sex (as per the Supreme Court ruling which says "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refer exclusively to biological sex) will we know the balance of men and women in Holyrood. Sex matters. Facts matter.

The men who tried to get on the Giggle app (there were many) did not want acceptance. They wanted control and they were mad that women were saying no to them. It became a game to see who could knock down the boundaries. They wanted in because they weren't welcome.

Remember, a male politician with or without a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) cannot enter the women's toilets in the Scottish Parliament. Remember, a biological male holding a GRC cannot legally demand or expect access to any female-only toilets. @POScotParl #JustSaying

Dear @POScotParl You cannot meet your GDPR equality reporting and EA requirements while presenting a male MSP as female on your MSP look-up website. Nor is "nonbinary" a legal sex option as you have listed. Please sort this immediately. We are watching.

@TwisterFilm That’s entirely up to him but he cannot compel others to use wrong sex pronouns with threats of discipline or it would result, I’d imagine, in risk of legal challenge under freedom of speech & expression rights - under which MSPs have enhanced rights.

While Westminster is distracted by utter chaos, I will always focus on Scotland’s priorities. My government will deliver swift and urgent action on the cost of living - capping food prices, lowering the cost of commuting and supporting first-time buyers.

The Unite the Kingdom march organisers are spreading hatred and division. They do not reflect the Britain I’m proud of. Peaceful protest is a fundamental right and one I will always protect. But if protest turns violent, we will act swiftly, with extra court capacity in place.
