design has never been a stable job. it’s always been about adapting. 2000s: designers were told → “just do visuals” 2010–2012: → “add UX, but don’t slow us down” 2014–2016: → “own the problem, product" so designers did what they always do. they adapted. they learned product. they learned business. took responsibility without the title or credit now in 2026, designers have to adapt again. its not a role change it’s designers refusing to be bottlenecked. call it design engineer or whatever. the pattern is pretty much same. designers go where the impact is.
