I’ve built 4 Shopify apps in the last two weeks, and my goal is to submit all of them by next week. The funny part? I’m not a developer, and I’m a terrible designer. AI has filled in the gaps where I was weakest and made building software possible for someone like me, a generalist, a master of none. My advantage isn’t writing the best code or creating the best designs. It’s understanding what the market needs, building quickly, launching fast, and iterating based on real feedback. That’s also why I don’t think UI, features, or even functionality are the real moat anymore. They still matter, but they’re becoming easier than ever to replicate. The moat is shifting to relationships, distribution, and ecosystems. Will the biggest apps integrate with yours? Will they share data? Will merchants have a reason to choose your app over dozens of similar options? In a world where someone can recreate your app in a day with AI, the advantage belongs to businesses that build trust, partnerships, exclusive integrations, and products that work better together. Maybe that’s a suite of apps that seamlessly share data. Maybe it’s a network of strategic partners. Maybe it’s simply giving merchants a reason to stay in your ecosystem. Building software has never been easier. Building something that’s difficult to replace has never been more important.
