@itypar @MGSMGN @HEITAIs Well alright, but that just means your initial reply saying its a buggy mess to set up is more accurate than what you said afterwards, which is that its easy to set up. I just wanted to know for sure, because I'm also considering emulating it, because the game is still months

Nothing will compare to seeing MGS4 running natively in 4K+ fonts/textures which is why MC Vol. 2 is going to be such a huge visual leap. @HEITAIs, the RetroTink4K delivers the best 4K upscale I’ve ever seen from an upscaler though. I finally managed a screengrab for comparison.

@torokszabolcs12 @MGSMGN @HEITAIs But that was 5 years ago. I know for sure they have made it way easier to get running now with the emulator. Back then it was all CPU bound so I had the lastest i9 at the time and a 3090 so I brute forced my way through it.

@torokszabolcs12 @MGSMGN @HEITAIs Well easy for me. I work in IT and computers my whole life so it's little bias of me. Normal people not really easy. Back then the hardest part was finding the correct build of the emulator that works with the updated version of MGS4 that had trophy support.

@MGSMGN @HEITAIs I ain't going to lie in the beginning. It was a buggy mess and would crash all the time & took me like a week to get it to run flawlessly. Would a normal user spent $3,500 & a week of their time to play mgs4 no. But a die hard MGS4 fan pissed off at Sony. You bet your ass!

Weak argument. Your version isn’t nearly as easy to set up, not everyone has the hardware to run it properly, and it’s still emulation. It doesn’t run flawlessly, requires shader compilation, and it’s far from a locked 60 FPS. Some cutscenes are also still 30 FPS because they’re pre-rendered videos that were never remastered. Native hardware will always have advantages over emulation.

@MGSMGN @HEITAIs I care about having full six axis support. To clear snakes camo suit during cutscenes and have the proper boss fight at the end with mantis with my PlayStation 3 controller. Again something I doubt you'll be able to do with the Xbox and steam versions of the remastered.

@MGSMGN @HEITAIs I don't care about 30FPS cutscenes because it's a movie anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️ I care about 4K\60 gameplay with better graphics with the same or better experience I had in 2008. That was the whole point of $3500 build in 2020 just for MGS4.

@MGSMGN @HEITAIs And once again I highly doubt the remaster will have all the licensing, the motorcycles, the iPods, the magazines, etc. And more importantly, highly doubt the PC version and the Xbox version will have six access support for the mantis boss fight at the end.

It's 2026, and people are still telling the lie that Metal Gear Solid 4 took this long to port because the Cell processor is too complicated 🤦‍♂️

There's old, and then there's "I worked on MS-DOS" old. It's the last time I got paid to write in assembly. I was fortunate to come in towards the last versions of MS-DOS. But I still expect it'll give me some serious riz down at the old tech folk's home in a few years ;-) Everything that I knew of in MS-DOS was written in hand-coded x86 assembler, which I had never coded in (I was a 6502/68000/PDP guy). I learned fast enough, but came to really hate segments! We used MASM 2 as our assembler, even though I think the product had reached v5 by then. At some point, when your code is the de facto standard, you can't just start using a new assembler... that would generate different code, a backward compatibility nightmare. I used EDIT.COM, the simple thing built into MS-DOS, as my code editor, nothing fancy. White on blue. I forget now what the debugger was, probably CodeView? You'll notice I religiously say "MS-DOS" and not just "DOS". There was literally a jar you had to deposit money in if you were caught just saying "DOS". Old habits die hard. There were some legendary brains on that team, and especially when you're a fresh college hire, I got to imprint on some of the best. But if there's one thing Bill Gates taught me, it was never to name-drop.

@zorrovulpes @thesnakesoup No not true at all. Not gonna lie I initially on release week in November 2001 was confused & pissed. But Raiden grew on me as I mastered the game. And when the behind the scenes DVD came out with the UK copy Kojima explain why and I was totally down for it story wise.

If you haven’t seen today’s news, it’s rocked the modding community in a big way. Earlier today Lance McDonald shared on X, “The entire source code and all assets for Metal Gear Solid 2 HD just leaked on 4chan,” likely tied to Armature Studio’s work on the Vita port. And this goes far beyond just the HD version. Our own MGN moderator and modder, @Afevis , whose contributions to the MGS2 and MGS3 modding scene speak for themselves (MGSHDFix) shared some early insight: “It’s not just the HD versions in the dump, it’s the full source code for the PS2 / Xbox / PC versions, everything up to Vita. The original E3 trailer script files are here. The cut Tanker water-escape sequence. 9/11 censored scripting. Internal file editors & tooling, etc.” When asked if there were more assets from the pre-9/11 build, he added: “It does. At a brief glance, Arsenal Gear -> Manhattan crash stuff was censored by simply commenting out code. Likewise, there’s E3 / Demo assets. HD version was definitely made from OG source, not 100% reverse engineered as people misinterpret from old Bluepoint Games interviews.” Modders are still digging through everything, but the implications are massive. This could mean restoring cut content, uncovering unseen material, and gaining a much deeper understanding of how the game was built. On top of that, it gives the community more tools to preserve and refine these games going forward. If even part of this holds true, this is a huge unexpected moment for the scene. More to come!

Metal Gear Solid 2 source code (HD version) just leaked alongside raw uncompressed assets. Yes it's real, I never thought this would happen.

Re: talk about MGS3 being influenced by MGS2’s reception, it’s very obvious who was actually around when it released and who wasn’t. I won’t get into the weeds here, but if you think it wasn’t the case, I have a bridge to sell you.
