Dr Shubhangi Nema and Prof. Leena Vachhani from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and Abhishek Mathur from IIT Goa, have developed a new software technique that uses fundamental geometry to track surgical tools in 3D without the need for expensive sensors or heavy computing power. Their software can estimate the position and orientation of the surgical instruments using a standard video feed. This cost-effective way to track instruments in 3D can enable better virtual reality training systems and, in future, can significantly reduce the cost of 3D visualisation systems in actual surgeries. iitb.ac.in/research-highl…

Deeply concerned and distressed to learn about the fire incident at the Surgical ICU of the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram this morning. My heart goes out to the patients and their families who had to endure this terrifying ordeal. I am immensely relieved that a major tragedy was averted and all patients were safely evacuated without a single casualty. My profound gratitude to the dedicated doctors, nursing staff, alert bystanders, and the Fire & Rescue personnel whose swift, courageous action (including the immediate shutting off of oxygen lines) saved lives today. At this sensitive hour, our collective focus must remain solely on the continued care and well-being of the patients, not on pointing fingers. Moving forward, we must collaboratively prioritize comprehensive safety audits across our vital healthcare institutions to ensure such alarming incidents are never repeated.
