@sp6runderrated Think reality is people hate both but a.) in poll form, most ppl assume "higher unemployment" impacts not-them and b.) prob threshold of tolerability within unemployment, like ppl would take 5% over 2% if it meant cheaper goods, but 10% is unacceptable regardless

@InlandCaGuy Everyone assumes they will be fine and it's someone else who will get hit by the "higher unemployment"

@ettingermentum Same way the party refuses to engage with Biden's age, Gaza, and is like 50/50 on "she didn't break enough with an unpopular incumbent". Whenever the public says something they don't like the party establishment really be like

IMO not being able to admit that Hillary was just flatly a crook and lost because of that has led Dems into overlearning a lot of minor lessons about that campaign to avoid reckoning with the main obvious one.

It’s a pretty revealing choice because these videos of the holes being filled and whatnot are getting a lot of views by themselves. Sometimes there’s such a thing as being too cynical and I think that’s the case with a lot of post-2016 Dem communication.
Sam Weinberg@SamJWeinberg

Sorry to agree with a far-right grifter, but the abject sexualization of good governance is a huge stain on Democrats’ ability to engage people digitally. If you have to resort to clickbait like this, you’re failing in your communication.

@ettingermentum @HeerJeet @ProblematicGrim Reagan maybe edge case? Never saw combat & got cushy assignments in LA but he did technically serve. Although clearly the less impressive/distinguished resume vs Carter in that regard.

@HeerJeet @ProblematicGrim If you include other armed service members of distinction you get an even longer list of losses, specially to people who never served. Carter 1980, Bush 1992 and Dole 1996 all qualify here.

The US has elected three presidents who evaded service in Vietnam War (Clinton, Bush, Trump). It has repeatedly rejected candidates who served in Vietnam with distinction (Gore, Kerry, McCain). The logical conclusion is US public doesn't care about this stuff. Maybe they should, but they don't.
Rick Wilson@TheRickWilson

Please don’t send this to @realdonaldtrump or his family members. It would be wrong to remind everyone he was a 5-time draft dodger and a coward.

@Sallyalcotnew @HeerJeet If you go far enough back they prob did; "good" wars like WWII, plus we had natl service for a time so someone who dodged would be looked down upon. But unpopularity of Vietnam & shift to volunteer military clearly turned service from mass culture touchstone to niche subculture

@HeerJeet The broader implication is the average American has never held a positive opinion of soldiers or US military. That’s the real reality here that doesn’t get said out loud. The minority has always been the US military folk.

@ColinCoxAZ @bufordsharkley @ettingermentum Campaign-wise he was still sharper in 16 than 20/24, & he had his finger much more on the pulse than Hillary did if you listen to his interviews at the time re:Bernie's appeal & the reports that he wanted Warren for VP. If Beau doesn't die I think he runs & wins by decent margin

@xenocryptsite ...in a way that eg Oscar parties are more niche. People I know who aren't really into sports will do/go to SB parties basically as an excuse for a Feb get-together. Don't think other sports or any awards have that same kind of cultural element to them.

@xenocryptsite Think maybe it's a combo of cultural elements + it being sport. There's something to watching sports live vs a replay that I don't think holds true for awards. WS viewers down but baseball isn't cultural force it once was, + SB parties are very much a thing culturally...

@lxeagle17 On the one hand I agree, on the other hand a ~4 pt loss doesn't seem that bad considering? Don't know she was ever going to win this matchup but a more normal/less sloppy campaign maybe could pick up something else in area if there's an opening in 2-4 years

Color me shocked that the Very Online Candidate with no experience and no real campaign strategy beyond "get likes on the internet" ended up losing a Democratic primary to the incumbent mayor of Evanston, Illinois.

@luigi_depressed @beanusoriginal @ettingermentum Think this is true but there are other offices that could potentially have an opening in the next few years. Not guarantee she wins any of those either but it's not like she's locked into only running for Congress or nothing

@beanusoriginal @ettingermentum Biss isn't the type of guy who's bad enough that you can realistically primary him. I think most Dems in his district will be fine with him. IL-08 is a better chance for a rematch since Bean is awful.

@ettingermentum NBC has it called for Biss but sitting at a 4% lead, which seems kind of respectably close-ish for a first time candidate who ran a not so good campaign. Disappointed but not surprised

@daveweigel Continue to think O'Toole lost out in 1964 bc of vote splitting (he should've gone supporting & Burton lead but they both went lead), no idea what happened in 68. But those were def his two most winnable years

Unlike Peter O’Toole, the patron saint of actors who missed their window, Fiennes lives clean and keeps getting cast in Oscar-tier stuff. Weird luck though. Not even nominated for The Grand Budapest Hotel (lost out to Steve Carrell’s fake nose in Foxcatcher)
Pope Crave@ClubConcrave

After hosting the 2025 Academy Awards, Conan O’Brien says Ralph Fiennes should have won an Oscar but probably never will: “It was like his fifth time being nominated, and he’s clearly the best actor in the room.”
