@jvalue171769006 @linet_bapt91540 @CFTCWorldline Right so declining margins are an issue. It would be interesting to see how that compares to the overall market growth. Presumably it will improve when the terminal issue is resolved

@Eirigi_Gaeil I've noticed that about Waterford. I just think Galway just doesn't have the historical economic base that is necessary for a working class that Limerick along with other port cities had.

Was in Limerick today, remarkable how much more working class the city is than Galway. Anyone got any idea why this is?

This is just a reminder that German law, supported by all mainstream parties, now endorses full gender self-ID. Germany always hops on trends from the Anglosphere 5-10 years too late, and accordingly recovers its sanity more slowly as well.

@FistedFoucault I agree on the British accent is key, that can totally determine whether I enjoy a documentary or not. Some 90s female British narrators I've liked though. That period is the pinnacle.

English language narration of anything historical should be limited to the following two groups: 1. Bongs with proper Queen's English accents 2. Southerners (USA) when the subject is the US Civil War No females.

@chribreuer I believed it. It's hard to think of another politician who could have held the blue wall for the conservatives. It seemed like a perm realignment at the time.

Boris Johnson's downfall is underrated. Even before he came into office both conservative and liberal pundits wrote about his huge political talent and how he will be a major element in British politics for decades. After 3 years he was gone and no one cares about him anymore.

@Paul_Heron_ Interesting. The election of Thatcher wasn't inevitable. I recently watched a documentary on the Winter of Discontent. Without it, it seems very likely Callaghan would have won. Massive self defeat for the unions.

The revolution of attitudes in the 60s—the rejection of the past, the end of deference etc—set up the necessary conditions for the stagflation-driven industrial strife of the 70s. And it was that strife that opened the door to Thatcher’s neoliberal revolution.

I used to hold to the standard British Left view that Thatcherism wrecked a good thing(UK social democracy). While there were certainly good things about the postwar system, the Left are equally responsible for their destruction. [..]

@s8mb A bank won't give you a mortgage to buy stocks but will for a house. That must increase the relative return for house buying.

Housing in Britain has increased in price by 1,393.92% since 1980. The S&P500 has increased by 4,874.44% over the same time period. It's a problem that housing is an investment, because it inflates its price. But homeowners haven't actually experienced a massive windfall.

@chribreuer Interesting point it seems to have become much less relevant, I can't think of a Olympian who is a household name since Usain Bolt.

Commi countries often did well at the Olympics cause they really focused on it (and doping). E.G. In 1976 almost all high-scoring countries were Eastern Bloc. China is the last country which takes the Olympics seriously nowadays. Why did Commis care so much about the Olympics?

@chribreuer I think the prestige of the economist was tied to its impressive print edition. In the online age it has less clout. The corporate summary style is available at endless other outlets.

Did "The Economist" decline in prestige? 10-15 years ago you regularly read about how it's the magazine all the important people read. Even the "Simpsons" made fun of this. I can't even remember the last time someone mentioned it, or linked an article here on this app.

@thephilippics Yes it's the preferred method in Ireland to create the impression of popular pressure for decisions already made. State funded NGO sector then lays pressure on to implement the recommendations of the assemblies.

@j_econ_ @JavierBlas @opinion Not sure which piece you mean. I did have a minor kerfuffle with @adam_tooze when he wrote a piece dismissing the gas shock to German industry out of hand.
Policy Tensor@policytensor

ht @adam_tooze. Now it is possible to test the hypothesis. Fears of energy shock-induced deindustrialization were overblown. But energy-intensive industries have been badly hit, suggesting that their success was indeed conditional on cheap Russian gas.

@thomasforth The quality of the density matters. Manchester and Dublin are surprisingly dense but I suspect its based on adults cramming into unsuitable house shares rather than apartments as in Europe

Hamburg, Stockholm, Copenhagen,... and on, and on, and on. Only Berlin is bigger. But not by much. And it isn't more dense at its core. So why is Manchester's economy by such a distance the weakest of all of them? Just not buying the "densify the city" stuff as counting much.

@kaschuta @Steve_Sailer @aksubversive I'd like to hear more about his take on the 60s cultural revolution in the West and its legacy. He called the sixties in one piece the "great mystery" of his lifetime.
