Kids mimic what they see and are exposed to. Learning to PITCH and not THROW takes a long time and feel. Someone who starts a social media space dedicated to pitches, pitch sequences, the mind game between pitcher and batter, and how to take advantage of batters and their tells could probably make a lot of money in that space because it’s NOT being done now.
Bill@BillBluesNo9

@BaseballDudes48 Because most kids/parents don’t want to learn how to “pitch” they want to learn how to “throw hard”. It’s a different mind set. Learning how to “pitch” is a lost art.

Know things about the schools who are most likely to call and you have interest in. Coach name, record, conference, potential major……lol, where the school is on the map are the least you should know. You are going to get opening texts that say “Hey man, how’s it going.” — “Good” is not the answer. Tell them in 2 short, clear sentences what you have been up to, but don’t over share—quick, but not “Good”. You are going to schedule a call with a coach….they aren’t going to call. Most times it’s late at night and they ran over on another call. Sometimes they are ghosting you. Don’t assume either. Plan for it in advance. Plan what you might say to politely reschedule the call. You are going to get along and feel good about a conversation with a coach and then they just ghost you—then suddenly they will text again out of the blue….it’s just weird. Getting an invite to camp STILL doesn’t mean they are REALLY interested in you, but it’s a step.

Parents who have lived through an August 1 with an older son: if you could sit across the kitchen table from a 2028 family tonight, what is the one thing you would tell them to do in the next two weeks? Give them the real version, not the brochure version. Best answers get shared here with credit before the month is out.

As a Dad of a son, who is nearing 6 months post-op for full UCL reconstruction plus Internal Bracing, I would say there is no one-size-fits-all answer and I can promise you there are no shortages of opinions of why it happened by surrounding people when it does happen. In the end it’s simply—An acute result from a chronic condition—whatever THAT condition is….and there are no shortages of conditions or opinions. Two quick questions: - Prior to Dr. Andrews breakthrough treatment for UCL Reconstruction, when a player “Blew out an elbow” they just stopped playing more or less. IS there an explosion of incidents or is there an explosion of potential recoveries from TJ surgery? - Why does tearing a ligament in your elbow get so much more exposure than tearing your labrum? A potential school or organization is more likely to take a chance on a player who has had some form of TJ surgery over Labrum surgery, but everyone just talks about TJ. Why?

Why has my elbow NOT blown out? Arm injuries are a hot topic in Baseball at all levels. It’s a deep topic with lots of strong opinions and beliefs. To be honest, I don’t think any of us know for certain why some break but others don’t. What we do know is they are breaking and have been breaking more often since around the year 2000. But here’s my question for the smart people out there who seem to have the answers on the why. I’m 48 and according to an MRI in 2023, my UCL is still fully intact. Here’s my history for you to reference: • Played only little league until the age 14 so I played no more than 20-30 games a season. • Started throwing curveballs around the age 11. • Played basketball and football (often QB) as a youth. • During HS years played summer balls after HS season. Babe Ruth as a freshman then American Legion as a sophomore and junior. • Threw 70 innings as a senior. • Father always made me take at least three months off from throwing during the winter months and would start throwing to prepare for the HS season around January 1st. Season started in March. • Drafted out of HS. • Pitched for 14 years. Threw approximately 1,500 innings. Mostly as a starter but had stints as a short reliever, long reliever and spot starter. • Played in instructional leagues, the fall league and winter ball during five different off seasons which means my arm didn’t get the rest/recovery time it did during other years. • Started coaching in 2012 and have been throwing BP and playing catch with players nearly every month, every week, every day since. • Currently instructing full time and make approximately 300-500 throws a day averaging 5 days a week. • Rarely throw max effort. Last time I did was 2019 while throwing to some college players. • At the peak of my velocity, I pitched in the upper 8’s - low 9’s. As far as I know, topped 94. I’m told with this generation of radar, that might be a few ticks higher. As a professional I was religious with taking care of my body and arm. Never iced my arm during the last 8 years of my career and haven’t since. Later in my career when in a starting rotation I would give myself no throw days. The day before a start and the day after I wouldn’t touch a baseball. As a reliever I would find days to not pick up a ball. Usually the day after a multiple inning appearance. So my question is, why hasn’t it blown out yet? With all the throwing I did and do now, most would say I should have blown out by now. I feel it’s inevitable but I’ll keep going as long as I’m able. Did I not throw hard enough? Is it genetics? Is it because I don’t throw with high intent any longer? Is it because I don’t play video games (I’ve heard this reasoning for injuries in young arms)? Is it because my throwing mechanics take stress off my arm? I’ve had people ask me this question and I don’t have an answer. What’cha got??

Deven, When I met face to face with USA Baseball in May about this exact topic, I had the same question + many others. I still have questions. That is why I’m testing. Contemplating. Finding answers I didn’t expect. Meanwhile, “-6 is bad” reigns w/out any testing or knowledge.
Deven Morgan@devenmorgan

@TheDataCage I am so flipping curious about it whether they’ve spec out a MOI floor for these new bats so that you can’t game the system and create a -6 that has close to the same mass @ contact as a -3.

Baseball folk… Give the parents out there some ideas of good baseball movies, documentaries, or docu series, for them to have their kids watch to help fuel that passion for the game. Lots of good ones out there for sure!! Let’s hear some…

Guardians fans are the worst. It’s like they just learned what the minor leagues are and have the expectation of the production continuing at the MLB level. They are clueless about what failures and adjustments have been made at EVERY level up to now and expect All star production out of the gate with no adjustments necessary.

@Rob_Shenanigans His walk ratio sucks, but his K ratios is solid. Must be something they’ve seen that they feel they can help him make a adjustment. 🤷🏻‍♂️… not terribly costly if it doesn’t work out

Which do you believe exposes deficiencies and/or highlights perseverance/grit in a players game that a college coach/MLB scout might want to see? It seems like both HS and Summer Ball you can “Hide” a player for a desirable outcome pretty easily. How do coaches/scouts see through that?

@j_hemlick Summer baseball is brutal to watch. Not downplaying the need for it. But a high school game you learn alot more about a player. Coaches can evaluate skillset pretty easy. It’s the actually playing the game part that separates the guy that gonna help us at our level or not.

I will die on the hill that High School baseball games are a better evaluation setting than summer ball games. It’s really not all that close.

Typically a HS season is a controlled environment vs a summer ball season that is less so. If I were evaluating a player, which I am not and never will be asked to, I would want to see the player in an uncontrolled environment and towards the end of their season when they are mentally exhausted in 90+ heat with nothing to win or lose.

Ensuring a player is willing and able to do whatever is necessary to help their team gain an advantage over the other team, with no regard what the particular players strong/weak suit is, is what makes baseball so great. Do what the situation requires—maybe you lose—maybe you win—-it’s baseball, a game of gaming the averages.

“Coaching is about putting kids into positions…” When coaches PUT kids into positions - kids can’t discover these themselves. There is no free lunch but my argument is the loss of discovery is more destructive than the benefit gained by the coach “controlling” game decisions. My argument is NOT to do zero coaching but rather - during game play let kids explore and discover and then discuss after. “Why not bunt here? Why didn’t you steal? Why did you get thrown out? What can you do differently?”
Mark Lucas@MarkL58073

@LegKickNationOG Asking a player to bunt is not hurting their development. It is asking them to perform a more difficult task. You are encouraging more development. Coaching is about putting kids in positions to express the skills they have learned at practice. Not removing yourself

@nats_sportschat I think you can add number 3... some fans are tired of every year the ceiling being winning a weak division and hope to get lucky in playoffs. Want owner to improve team ans shows he cares. Most fans want a team built for the playoffs and compete with big boys when it matters.

Those who complain about the Guardians either 1. Don’t know anything about baseball it’s a long season a few losses doesn’t mean all hope is lost. (The team literally makes the postseason almost every year) 2. Or they’re just miserable people who can’t enjoy anything
