@cremieuxrecueil Can’t wait until we have 5 or 6 vaccines that cover just about every viral infection anyone is likely to face. Death to illness!

In big families, there's usually someone who's got a viral infection. With six children, that holds about 87% of the time: The culprit? Younguns. Kids younger than five are sick about half the time and older kids, about half that.

@bryancsk No, it's bad for their development! We should make efforts to continue eliminating infectious disease so that people develop to their full potential. The myth that getting sick makes you stronger has led to irreparable damage to generations of kids.

@TVGrimReaper It’s a myth that the MLS lost all these TV viewers by going with Apple or that they were somehow primed for great growth on television before Apple. No way. It was the right move to take the money and they will miss the cash once it’s over because there’s nothing else.

@TVGrimReaper This a small preview of the 2030s. Traditional rights holders unwilling or unable to increase their bids for sports rights versus tech companies. Broadcasters better home network tv is still worth something to the leagues at that point.

@akhivae Even in Israel nothing is a sure thing. As Haredi grow to be greater % of Israeli population, they will change and be changed by greater society in Israel. No telling what this means for Israeli demographic long term.

1. Fertility rates in high religious, conservative developing nations has fallen dramatically often to sub-replacement levels. 2. In first world countries, the religious sometimes have a small fertility advantage that is negated through losing 30 to 50% of each new generation to secularization. 3. Religious, high fertility sub-groups (Amish, Haredi Jews) will expand rapidly. But they are non-existent across most of the world. Israel is the only country that will noticeably change because of them in the coming decades.

@neilcybart Why are you gonna do tho? Sports role in culture is ever diminishing. Best you can do is tie up with world class athletes that are famous for being world class regardless of specific sport.

Who at Nike is willing to make the case to Phil Knight and Mark Parker that Nike can't anchor themselves to what is a weakening NBA product? While Tim Cook is Nike's lead independent director, he's a big sports fan himself (and his plate is full with Apple).

Elliot Hill, Nike's new CEO, thinks the company lost its "obsession with sport." His turnaround involves Nike pivoting back to sports and the NBA in particular. One problem: Nike isn't willing to admit that the NBA isn't what it used to be. insideorchard.com/essays/nike-ne…

@UltraHDBluray According to the RIAA, in 2022, CD rev dropped 18% vs 2021 to $483M. In 2023, rev grew 11% to $537M. No 2024 #s yet. I will start being worried about movies when rev is below CD.

Of course, in hindsight we can also conclude that the point in time where Blu-ray Disc was launched meant it could never become as successful as DVD, even if it had completely displaced the format.

In 2005, DVD sales flatlined (+4%), and VHS sales fell off a cliff (-75%). The physical media business seemed to think it was in a temporary slump. We now know this was the beginning of a terminal decline. AP / The Hollywood Reporter @THR in 2006: hollywoodreporter.com/business/busin…

@TVGrimReaper Wouldn’t a successful ad tier disincentive increasing the price for that tier in order to maximize eyeballs for ads. You might even lower the price. I don’t get it unless Netflix isn’t getting top dollar for ads.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but the fundamental idea found with long-form video (i.e. movies) is in trouble. Very few people are considering what the rise of short-form video is doing to society. Our attention spans are being hijacked so that we have no problem spending hours on phones, watching 10-second clips of drivel and nonsense.

This clip is a great example of industry folk being clueless about what is really going on. Movie theater struggles have nothing to do with movies being OK, but not spectacular. The problem goes much deeper. Movie theaters are dying because society has evolved. The value proposition has been neutered. "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" success wasn't due to movie theaters. Instead, both went viral on short-form video platforms. Add Apple Vision Pro into this discussion and there is no future for movie theaters. Nothing can be done about it either. Add movie theaters to arcades, billiard halls, etc. - establishments that we as a society have moved past.
Squawk Box@SquawkCNBC

“This is a disaster,” says @MattBelloni of the disappointing holiday box office. “It just shows that if you’ve got the goods and people want to see the movie, they will show up. But good is not good enough for movie theaters anymore – it’s got to be great.”

@akhivae Is this because office workers are seen as having more leisure time or as not having to work as hard to live comfortably?

Somewhat related, I see a lot of wealthy business families from India, and other developing nations, spend big money to send their kids to Canada where they become office workers. Despite earning less it's seen as upward mobility. The family business extinguishes with no heir.

In China, high-ranking officials were revered. Once Chang Shih-i (16th century) was prosperous, he hired a local scholar to teach his two sons. When one passed the provincial examination, his wife jubilantly declared, “Now we can get ourselves of this trade business!”

Sejong makes me sad ngl. South Korea did so much to make it family friendly and at one point it seemed it just might work as the TFR there was above 1.5 a few years back. But it seems nowhere in Korea can get away from lowest low now. Very hard to see a demographic recovery.

South Korea Fertility Rates (2022) HIGHEST 1. Sejong - 1.12 2. Gangwon - 0.97 3. South Jeolla - 0.97 LOWEST 1. Seoul - 0.59 2. Busan - 0.72 3. Incheon - 0.75 NATIONAL AVERAGE: 0.78

@TVGrimReaper HBO is so strange. They have many shows hardly anyone watches especially in comedy, sports, and talk shows. You would think they would try different things to see if they can find more viewers for those time slots but instead they do endless seasons of Gumble, Maher, and Oliver.

More people watching a particular show on Netflix today than HBO “back in the day” isn’t surprising. HBO only *ever* programmed ~4 shows/ yr anybody might watch. Most HBO originals were/are unwatched filler.

$NFLX—it is fascinating to see an 8-year old HBO show (Ballers) in the US domestic top 10 list for $NFLX (#5) right now. It is possible that more viewers spent more time watching Ballers on $NFLX in the last two weeks than previously watched the show on HBO over 8 years-how…
