It's more than that, it's the ugly way we build and plan. Almost all "nice" places are simply OLDER, with a high percent of pre-WWII structures and street plans. Fast growing places are all new build, which feels/looks outright dystopian, thus people object.

Significant property taxes are NOT a universal or even normal thing. Many countries and much of the southern USA have fairly nominal rates. It's a specific mechanism to enforce a "workism" type society, which is why they are high in the northeast USA.
