We're on the third leg of the triathlon mixed relay - GB and Germany in the lead. France were involved in a bike crash on leg one and are a long way back.

@oldenoughtosay Yes definitely - in the area I used to cover alone there are dozens of objects in a small number of distinct groups subject to claim (grave collections stolen from active graveyards).

@oldenoughtosay I’m assuming here - I didn’t hear the interview, but I used to work on claims when I worked there, and that’s the only explanation for that figure.

@oldenoughtosay What he’s doing is listing the number of specific claims that have been made using the legal claims system (not fit for purpose). This explicitly excludes potentially hundreds of thousands of objects potentially subject to claim but not eligible for the claim system.

The myth making is out of control. George H.W. Bush flew 58 combat missions as a pilot against the Japanese, and successfully completed a bombing run in a burning plane before having to bail out had to bail into the Pacific Ocean, where he floated for hours before being rescued.

With 9 days to go until the election, the Conservatives are running out of time to reset the narrative. Partygate was a shock and a betrayal. Now the gambling scandal confirms the perceptions voters already had of the Tories (and politicians more broadly, fairly or unfairly).

The Conservatives could well still come a clear second in both votes (say 23-24%) and seats (say 70-90 seats) with a performance that looks closer to a third party performance along lines of LibDems 2005-10 than a major one.

@sundersays it may or not be true that people want Labour to win big 🤔, but there are a hell of a lot of people who want the Tories to lose very very badly.

Jenrick tells Telegraph readers that "a right-wing common sense majority" is split between Conservatives and Reform, whose joint share is 36% on average, behind Labour alone on 44% while other centreleft parties have 16-18%. "Nobody" asked for Labour to win big, he claims

Jenrick warns of a "Labour dictatorship" using Hailsham's 1976 "elective dictatorship" phase. There are more checks & balances on the executive than under Thatcher (eg devolution, FoI, HRA/ECHR) though Jenrick opposes some of those checks on exec power

@oldenoughtosay I actually got very good using this route at identifying which obscure Victorian tea trader had stolen what from where, and how they’d tried to cover it up.

@oldenoughtosay When I started at the British Museum in 2008 there were a lot of very old curators who would say “the identity of this donor is lost to the mists of time.” Twenty minutes on google later I would produce a printed biography of him and they came to look on me as a wizard of sorts.
