Huge, beautiful lupine pollen loads on this Bombus nevadensis!

@wildflower_val @pollenmicrobes I really want to swab these stinky bees! I've noticed the nevadensis smell stronger as the season progresses.

@pollenmicrobes They smell like cheetos... interesting! @jacquelyn_fitz are convinced that Bombus nevadensis also has a savory smell (garlic, doritos, and wet dog are some of the descriptions). I'm very curious as to why they have such strong scents.

Fieldwork on the beach collecting Anthophora bomboides brood cells, which smell like cheetos?! There’s a column of pollen in the middle. They are nesting all over the cliff (zoom in on it!) & dig the nests into the cliff by adding water to the hard dirt to soften it as they dig.
