I wrote about my grandmother, Chien-Shiung Wu — a pioneering nuclear physicist who’s on a 2021 USPS stamp — but also about loss, immigrants, fame, scientific ambition, women in STEM, and the questions we have about our families that are too late to ask. washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2021…

New: For those who don't want Trump's face on their passport, they can renew online or go to a passport agency outside of DC. But this will be the only available passport for those who show up in person at the Washington Passport Agency until this limited edition runs out
John Hudson@John_Hudson

Confirmed: The State Department is releasing new U.S. passports emblazoned with Trump’s image (including his gold signature)

The Hilton donated the ~2600 dinners that went unserved at WHCD. They freeze dried the steak and lobster for longer shelf life before giving them to 2 shelters for abused women and children. HUGE thank you to the staff that worked through the night under terrible circumstances.

Want to say, the one pure, good thing about @washingtonpost is @shanejoneill's "Seriously?" newsletter. I hate that it comes into my email as "The Washington Post," but it comes from Shane, who is a great writer and iconoclastic thinker. It's a miracle. Recommend subscribing.

@rachelsklar @NYMag @washingtonpost The manager was beloved, but also followed the orders of long gone publisher Will Lewis and did not do basic research. Which is bad management. The one good thing I’ll say about The Post is that HR went above and beyond, and our guild fought for great FMLA policies.

When I was in my early 20s, 3 mo. into my first job at @nymag, my boss wouldn’t let me off to see my dying grandfather. Since then I’ve been appalled to see how little bosses know about federally and state protected family medical leave, including recently at @washingtonpost 1/2
Brendan Farrington@bsfarrington

How drastically have things changed at @AP? In February 2020, before the COVID shutdown, I asked for a Friday and Monday off during the legislative session to see my dying father. They said no, I was too critical for our Florida Statehouse coverage. I never got to say goodbye to my father in person. This year, AP decided they don’t need anyone in Tallahassee at all, not during session and apparently not ever. My 27+ years at AP were mostly wonderful. Now, it’s just sad to see how upper management is destroying one of the most important news organizations in or our country’s history.

@jadabird Thank you for saying this! But, also, federal law only covers you if you're been there 1 yr, worked 1250 hrs & they have 50 workers w/in 75 miles. Some cities and states have laws covering more workers than that. Folks should know their rights! (& which laws apply to them).

Actually I’m going to tell the @washingtonpost story. My father in NM had a mini-stroke (he’s doing great now) and then The Post implemented RTO. I asked for a week every other month to work remotely from there because it’s impossible to do a quick trip to rural NM from NYC.

@lindsaylwallace I feel like companies will take all kinds of advantage of you when you’re young, and I was shocked it happened again 20 years later! A lot of it isn’t malice, just negligence. And the best thing workers can do is educate and stand up for ourselves and each other.

@lindsaylwallace That’s so awful. Really feel for you and thank you for sharing those amazing essays. And JFC about the bereavement days being vacation days. With my grandfather, my boss’s response was, “Well, you know that’s coming out of next year’s vacation.”

Emerging from twitter retirement because when I was 21 my mom died while I waited on hold with customer service on my boss's behalf. I'll always shout from the rooftops to say that no job has the right to keep you from being at that bedside.
Jada Yuan@jadabird

It’s unconscionable for managers to bully employees into missing the death of a loved one. Not everyone has salaried jobs, but you have rights and many companies have bereavement leave. You may lose pay, but in most cases, it is ILLEGAL for you to lose your job. 2/2
