PM Modi spoke to every Indian yesterday requesting them to use petrol and diesel with restraint, look at WFH, when possible, conserve foreign exchange where one can…. Most people will read this as a routine ask but I read it differently, simply because I've been tracking the data around Hormuz crisis ever since war broke out. The situation around tanker movements out of Hormuz for past 2 weeks gives a bleak picture. India hasn't been receiving tankers from that route in any normal pattern; seems the pipeline has thinned to a trickle. On top of that, we are aware of the news that's already public that Iran has set up a Persian Gulf Strait Authority that demands cargo declarations, crew details, voyage plans before ships can transit. Bloomberg, Reuters, FT have all reported tolls of up to $2 million per voyage, and payable in yuan or Bitcoin. Iran has resorted to politics and economics of blackmail. Two Indian-flagged merchant ships were fired upon and we saw how MEA summoned Tehran's ambassador to convey Indian displeasure. In short, all data points tell one story. The world's most important shipping lane has been converted into a private toll corridor and the message to every country dependent on that route is the same: Pay, Comply Or wait. PM Modi is not someone to subject to anyone’s blackmail and hence we need to look at the PM's appeal in this light. As an Indian would you prefer that we fall prey to this blackmail or would you prefer your self respect? Someone in the Persian Gulf has miscalculated, they have assumed that pressure on India can be priced in dollars per barrel. And they will learn the same lesson several others have; India does not negotiate from a position of fear, esp not when PM Modi and his people are standing on the same side of the line.
