I mean, you have to take that up with Jesus, Paul and the students of the Apostles, Ignatius and Polycarp. The whole idea of him being crucified again is a pretty big stretch that folks make, when Jesus himself says “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no part with me”. Why did “many” leave him right after he said that if they knew it was intended to be metaphorical?

Young evangelical men are sprinting to Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy to escape evangelical youth group culture. This is driving them out! They are trading sentimentalism/emotionalism for tradition, history, doctrine, and high liturgical practices.

Culturally, “believe” potentially doesn’t means the same thing to the recipients of the text as the modern day reader interprets. Believing wasn’t merely an intellectual capability, it was a holistic reality. That’s why Jesus “believe and be baptized and you shall be saved” in Mark 16. Same thing applies to James’s warning that even the demons believe (intellectually, they know and believe Jesus is God) and shall forever be damned.
