Bus routes can be cancelled with a snap of the fingers. Bus services did in fact replace many closed railway lines...for a few months. Then they vanished. Buses are also a far less pleasant and usually slower means of travel, as anyone turfed off the Oxford train at Didcot and made to use a bus (a frequent occurrence) can tell you. .@paulrowntree

@ClarkeMicah The problem was that rail and bus were not integrated. If most of the closed rail services had been replaced with railway coachea, connecting at stations, liveried as such and with through fares there wouldn't be much of an issue. 1/3

Western airlines have a cabin crew politeness problem.
I’ve flown with Air France, British Airways, United, Delta, Jet Blue, Ryanair, Virgin Atlantic, Vueling , EasyJet…
And apart from Ryanair being extra terrible they were all the same. Crews making you feel like it’s a bother when asking for the most basic things like water, flight attendants going “beef chicken or pasta” during meal service without a few words on what each option actually is etc.
Of course there were exceptions, and it’s better in business, but overall it’s remarkably terrible service and everyone seems to be ok with that.
And before someone goes “it’s actually very tiring and there are a lot of passengers to go through” my dad is a pilot so I’ve heard a lot of the conversations, including a few flight attendants saying they were appalled by the way most of their colleagues treated and talked about passengers.
Something needs to change, airplanes are super safe now so it’s mostly a service job and the service is bad.

I actually agree, but the cost of building infrastructure in the UK is so wretchedly expensive, what's the point? Do you trust any politician to actually bring in a project in within a reasonable price?
And in the past when it's been tried with things like Metrocab (trying to keep the costs down), opening more local lines didn't really prove the massive success everyone thought they would.

.@jamesderoest.Of course I have, but this is the result of the pulling up of the rail network so millions of people cannot easily reach railheads, and because of a fare system designed to deter passengers. Roads are like that because they are meant to be.

Now Beeching, he was an idiot and what he did was a crime against railways in the UK. It's not the tearing out of rail, it's the destruction of infrastructure, and disposal of land (for probably not much) that was downright mean.
Was it Ilfracombe where he not only tore out the tracks but destroyed a bridge ensuring rail could never come back?

Not to mention the car parks filled with things that transported a single person there (yeah, yeah you all carpool right 😂). So a space roughly 15’ by 6’ is occupied for hours. In the footprint of one average car, you could fit: * a tiny coffee kiosk with outdoor seating * a sheltered bench and mini reading garden * bicycle parking for 8–12 bikes * a small street-food stall * a children’s play nook * a community noticeboard + flower planters * a micro outdoor pub table area for 6–8 people * a compact urban greenhouse * a tiny live-music busking corner * a public chess or poker table
