I know this may ruffle some feathers on the Left and on the Right, but...
I am convinced that we cannot responsibly speak out against Christian Nationalism without also speaking out against Christian Zionism. And there are more Christian Zionists than there are Jewish Zionists.
Christian nationalism and Zionism share so much in common...
Both twist Scripture to justify violence, colonization, and the pursuit of power...
Both embrace a distorted theology of "chosenness" that leads to a hierarchy of human value, where some lives matter more than other lives...
Both manipulate the character of God to favor one group of people over another... in such a way that it would be unthinkable for any human parent to act towards their children.
And both Zionism and nationalism create an idol of the nation-state, be it Israel or America, where the State replaces Jesus as God's central messianic force in the world. The State becomes the hand of God. This is why "America First" or "Israel First" is a theology heresy.
The conflation of the ancient Israelites with the contemporary nation of Israel is bad theology and dangerous politics. It gives theological cover and moral immunity to a government that continues to exploit that power and do tremendous harm.
It is certainly important to be clear about the difference between anti-semitism and anti-Zionism. Antisemitism is wicked -- it is targeted hatred, bigotry, and discrimination aimed at Jewish people simply because of who they are as Jews. Anti-Zionism is altogether different -- it distinguishes between Jewish people and the nation of Israel, honoring the fact that Jews around the world are leading the way in standing against Israel's escalating violence in Gaza and throughout the Middle East. Anti-Zionism is a rejection of the political ideology and divine sanction of the nation-state of Israel that allows it to do things we would never allow for any other nation in the world to do -- collective punishment, forced starvation, ethnic cleansing, genocide... all of which operate through a theological worldview that Israel can do no wrong, and to stand against the contemporary state of Israel is to stand against God.
This is why we must reject all forms of Christian nationalism while also standing against anti-semitism and hatred in every form.
Every human being is made in the image of God -- No exceptions.
It is always wrong to kill children. It was wrong on October 7 and it is wrong right now. Violence is the disease not the cure.
Destroying a human life is an attack on the image of God...
So let us stand on the side of love. God is love.
Our enemy is hatred. Let us unite our hearts in love as we stand against the drums of war and the escalating violence in Israel and Iran. And let us all reject the lie that some lives are more precious than others.
