My Nani was seventeen when she got married. Before that, she had a dream she wanted to become a doctor. But in those days, dreams for girls often came with conditions. Her father said, “इतना पढ़कर क्या करेगी? शादी तो करनी ही है।” And just like that, the dream was folded away. She got married into a decent family. Her husband was a forest guard. He provided everything, he respected her. By society’s standards, she was “lucky.” She became what was expected . A perfect bahu, then a mother of four within a few years. Cooking on a chulha, managing the house, stitching clothes, serving everyone before herself. She did everything right. Years later, when I was a child, I found a small box in the storeroom. Inside were old medical books Anatomy, physiology, chemistry. Pages filled with her neat handwritten notes. A different life… quietly preserved. I asked her, “Naani, aap doctor banne wali thi?” She smiled, a little awkward, a little distant. “Woh sab shaadi se pehle ki baat hai.” “Phir chhoda kyun?” She paused. “Us time ladkiyan aisa nahi karti thi. Zimmedariyan thi.” But she had kept those books for over 50 years. Not by accident.. but as a reminder of who she once was. Then one day, my Cousin sister got into medical college. Nani cried for a long time. “Khushi ke aansu hain,” she said. Maybe they were. Or maybe they were years of silence finding a voice. My sister became the doctor my Naani couldn’t be. When she passed away at 90, people spoke about her the way they always had: A devoted wife, a loving mother, a woman who did everything right. But no one mentioned she once wanted to be a doctor.💔 PS : Maybe Some dreams don’t die. They wait. And sometimes, they return.. stronger, louder, in the next generation. #SundayStory #Fictional
