@adam_tooze @MauriceHoefgen @lukas_scholle

It is the so-called 'normal' distribution that is abnormal in the sense that it has many unique properties not possessed by any other. -- E. T. Jaynes

Funny how 5 years ago we had all these debates about wealth taxation, and a big argument was that billionaires don't have that much power really—and right after that Musk bought Twitter for $44B, used it to get Trump win, and now to prop up the global neo-nazi movement ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

🔥 Hey NetPals! Just your friendly seminar recap. Last time, we welcomed Yuan Zhang from the University of Zurich, who talked about selective exposure and echo chambers on social media.

RIP Walter Korpi -- one of the key figures in the development of the "power resources theory". Let me take this opportunity to connect some recent work in (labour) economics to this way of thinking about the welfare state and the political economy of redistribution.
Gerardo L. Munck@GerardoMunck

The Swedish sociologist Walter Korpi has passed away. He is known for elaborating power resource theory, an approach to the welfare state that holds that the power of the working class is a key determinant of the welfare state. These are some of his influential works.👇

Really excited about this new 📢working paper 📢: Spatial voting models have a long and rich history in explaining how parties position themselves (dating back to Hotelling 1929). However, they usually assume that voters' ideological preferences stay constant. For the first time, Leonie Geyer and I have developed a model where voters' opinions are influenced by other voters, as well as the party that they currently support. We show that this has a strong impact on the results, both in terms of the success of various party strategies, as well as in terms of the resulting distribution of voters and parties. Our model covers two ideology dimensions and is largely based on a combination of two very well-known models, namely the spatial voting model by Michael Laver (APSR: 2005) and the opinion dynamics model with bounded confidence by Hegselmann and Krause (JASSS: 2002). This combination offers fresh insights into both models. Read the full WP here: static.uni-graz.at/fileadmin/sowi…

Unemployment weakens governments. Inflation kills. The politically destructive power of inflation had been forgotten. Standard policy tools left us unprepared and fueled inequality. The re-election of Trump should serve as a warning to all democrats. My first @nytopinion. 1/
