@nifemi_os @HAKEEMIIY @salmabanks_ My point wasn’t the will of the people is helpless —yes it’s needed. But saying “The will of the people is so strong that even in the most corrupt countries. They still progress.” I would love to know about those countries. Lol the same unilag? 😂

lol. One of the greatest tragedies of Nigeria today is pretence that the will of the people is helpless.if it were so, populism wouldn’t be the trend of our democracy. Local governments elections, poor turn outs. If Unilag alone chooses a professor today and all come out to vote, they would single-handedly determine who the local govt chairman is. The will of the people is so strong that even in the most corrupt countries. They still progress. The people don’t need the govt to keep the streets clean, or to not pick up arms.or to choose representatives.

@HAKEEMIIY @nifemi_os @jathom48 @salmabanks_ Too concerned about individualism. The individualism in Nigeria, if it starts, can never end. Remember, there are more than 250 languages. We are a highly heterogenous group of people. We cannot divide into 250 pieces.

@nifemi_os @HAKEEMIIY @salmabanks_ I agree a little. I think It’s easy to pin this on the will of The people but the point there’s no accountability both on the local and federal levels. What does the Will of the people do when the supposed leaders are incompetent?

I disagree tho, regionalism is foolishness that should never been to start with and a big contributor to the present divisiveness. And I am 100% certain it is rooted in selfishness and individualism, cos yes some regions will undeniably develop faster, like the SS, it becomes an excuse to look away from the regions that struggle. Afterall they’re not from my region and even deepen the divide. Rather, I would say we’re currently on the right path. If there’s anything this current govt is doing right, it’s strengthening the local govt. Many local govts are the size of Singapore, some bigger. There’s 774 of them. Let the local govts take control of their micro economies with more intention. You can have 774 lky. If atleast half do their part, you’ll have a different country. An example: look at the mayors in other democratic societies

In the year 2000, Lee Kuan Yew gave a 2-hour masterclass on leadership worth more than an MBA. He built Singapore into a First World nation in one generation All your politicians need to attend his class
Salz@salmabanks_

I once went down into a rabbit hole of how Singapore turned their economy around to becoming one of the world superpower, and I came across how Nigeria was instrumental to that development. How you may ask? When Lee Kuan Yew visited Nigeria and saw how we were criminally..

@nifemi_os @HAKEEMIIY @salmabanks_ Lee Kuan Yew didn’t wait for people to magically unite he forced cohesion through policy. In From Third World to First, Singapore used English as a neutral language, kept Malay as national identity, and enforced integration

@jathom48 @HAKEEMIIY @salmabanks_ lol. The two of you still don’t see how this desire for regionalism is part of the problem, he’s shading the collective individualism of the people and the lack of collective will, but you still think “ we would have been better off regionalism” rather than put regionalism behind

@nifemi_os @HAKEEMIIY @salmabanks_ That’s not accurate. Lee Kuan Yew didn’t solve division by “abandoning regional identity”—he managed diversity with policy. In From Third World to First (his book), he shows how Singapore used: •English as a neutral working language •Malay as national identity

@theairbuser @jathom48 D same pple who are in government today were D ones who mislead the people when GEJ removed subsidies. Same people castigated Atiku, Now subsidies have been removed where are the shock absorbers they promised. Truth is had they allowed the privatization years ago we wont be herr

There is a deep irony here - LKY was right about what he saw in Nigeria but he picked the wrong example. Festus Okotie-Eboh’s reputation has suffered so much damage partly because of his flamboyance, partly because of LKY’s comments. In reality he was an incredibly hardworking and intelligent minister. He was far above his contemporaries in ability and he absolutely got stuff done. Ok, he did collect 10%, but by today’s standards and everything that has come after him, that’s a bargain!

Lee Kuan Yew made corruption so risky that when his Minister for National Development was under investigation for bribery in 1986, he committed suicide before the investigation was over because he knew the outcome was going to be far worse if he was found guilty.

Development don't happen by luck it is built on strict governance, accountability, and long-term planning. Nigeria must fight corruption seriously not just in words but with real consequences. Singapore made corruption risky and unattractive, and that changed everything.

I have been slowly reading Lee Kuan Yew’s From Third World to First. He begins his reminiscence of his participation in the Commonwealth with his visit to Lagos in 1966, when Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was Prime Minister and Kwame Nkrumah was President of Ghana. I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but I nearly cried. He described Tafawa Balewa as a man of quiet authority. Under Balewa, Chief Festus was Nigeria’s Minister of Finance. Festus was preparing to retire with the pride of having served his country diligently and to return to his shoemaking factory, but had earlier introduced a tariff to discourage foreign shoe imports. I hope my reader understands. In Ghana, another minister, who had only just survived a corruption scandal, was bragging about how well he had done in appropriating certain privileges of being in government to his personal advantage, and had schooled two of his children in Switzerland. I was just nodding in disappointment as I flipped the page. Our problem in Africa has always been people who see nothing wrong with what they consider the bare minimum of self-enrichment through public office. We even regard those who do not indulge in such practices as naive. Well, this is where that destructive mindset and greed have brought us. Africa has not been blessed with many selfless, service-oriented leaders. I hope that a cohort of decent people finds its way into leadership one day. Until then, I will continue watching television powered by my low-quality solar installation, necessitated by unreliable grid electricity.

People are quoting this but can't recognise that he is indicting the people also. Just like then, today there is no real will to be a single nation, and no interest in the rule of law. People on this same app are begging for colonisation and "protectorates" to be recreated for resource plundering. People here throw e-daggers at you not because you did them any wrong; not because you were a leader who ruined the lives of their kin, but simply because you LOOK like or said something good about another tribe or region. If a person from another religion dies and you want to honour them, people from your religious identity will remind you that they died a heathen / kafir. People openly advocate for discrimination. The moment a person in public service dares to defy the status quo and follow due process, his/her colleagues will ensure that person is transferred to another department, frustrated or even poisoned. Nigeria is cursed because of the mentality, the attitude, and the behaviour of her people.
