Secondhand should, sometimes, maybe even often take precedent over new. But, buying secondhand clothes alone is not going to fix fashion, because quality secondhand still depends on someone buying quality clothes new.

And as much as people say they would spend more for better quality, they largely do not. People with the means to afford better quality tend to buy more cheap goods, not fewer expensive goods. This is consumerism.

"Most people can't afford these." But the average Shein shopper spends $100 a month on Shein. Obviously, averages don't apply to everyone but there's a very disingenuous theme in this conversation where people imply EVERY Shein shopper is poor/shopping out of necessity.

If you can shop online--especially with any sort of regularity or high frequency--you can shop secondhand. When it comes to fashion, that's not just clothes: there's an entire world of pre-loved shoes, belts, purses, jewelry, etc. that you can access online. Walk with me. 🧵

So you get people saying things like, “You can’t expect people to change their behaviors so quickly!” When the behaviors have already changed quickly. Shein’s presence in the US in less than a decade old. They didn’t explode until the pandemic. It’s new.

One of the most interesting aspects of the consumption conversation is the mass amnesia regarding how recent this level of buying is. People have backfilled (memory holed?) that they’ve always bought this much, when that very much is not the case.

A lot of people on this app want to call folks broke and ugly out one side of their mouth yet lament classism and exclusionary beauty standards out the other, because their actual point of contention isn’t the existence of these things, it’s that they’re not on top of the pile.

Amazon is worth $2 trillion. But it didn't deign to pay the millions of dollars it racked up in unpaid fines as its’ trucks illegally polluted our air and forced New Yorkers to breathe in their exhaust.  
We collected every dollar they owe the people of this city — and will continue to hold them accountable. In New York, corporations are held to the same standard as everyone else.
