@sindap Also a function of structure, what is the surviving entity (almost surely UBS here given differences in valuation), who controls management (here, chairman UBS, CEO UBS) etc. It's an acquisition

Happy Birthday to one of the Greatest Disruptors in the history of India. The year is 1948. India is newly independent. You are from an elite family, who was just graduated from the Michigan state University, on Govt Scholarship and have come back to India.

How Rabindranath Tagore got & broke the news of his Nobel Prize. He was chairing a meeting on fund-raising for drainage repair in the school he had founded in Santiniketan when he was handed a telegram. He read it, looked up & said, “The money for the drains has just been found.”

@deepakshenoy agree. in fact that s a particularly good example - because both deal in gold, they need to build enough trust for customers to pledge their liquid assets to them at (often) 15-20% haircuts. But my point stands - if you are retail facing, you need good service

@jayesh_nair Manappuram and Muthoot are brilliant examples of exemplary customer service with very high NIMs. They focus on the customer problem - and can lend at 20% where banks have similar loans at 7%.

I'm not sure why people think banking is about customer service. It's hardly that. Banking is about banking. There's a core thing that involves risk, liquidity, credit, trading and float management. Everything else involves feeding this machine. #OkGettingOffSoapBox

The best investors do nothing 99% of the time. They sit on their hands, sometimes for years, preparing. Reading, thinking, analyzing. Then, when the right opportunity comes along, they strike with conviction. It sounds easy. It’s not.

@deepakshenoy and if you have other sources of NIM (e.g. credit investments), u dont have to worry about customers much at all - which is what credit hedge funds are (risk, middle office and other infra, no customer facing)

@deepakshenoy customer service matters for banks where your principal source of funds are customer deposits.. If you have other sources (bonds, grants etc), really doesnt matter as much.
