@deepakshenoy agree. in fact that s a particularly good example - because both deal in gold, they need to build enough trust for customers to pledge their liquid assets to them at (often) 15-20% haircuts. But my point stands - if you are retail facing, you need good service

@jayesh_nair Manappuram and Muthoot are brilliant examples of exemplary customer service with very high NIMs. They focus on the customer problem - and can lend at 20% where banks have similar loans at 7%.

I'm not sure why people think banking is about customer service. It's hardly that.
Banking is about banking. There's a core thing that involves risk, liquidity, credit, trading and float management. Everything else involves feeding this machine. #OkGettingOffSoapBox

@deepakshenoy and if you have other sources of NIM (e.g. credit investments), u dont have to worry about customers much at all - which is what credit hedge funds are (risk, middle office and other infra, no customer facing)

@deepakshenoy customer service matters for banks where your principal source of funds are customer deposits.. If you have other sources (bonds, grants etc), really doesnt matter as much.
