@DBashIdeas @Historycourses I realized that I associated "serious" orthodoxy (AKA people who know how to learn) with the yeshiva world and pleasant shabbat divrei torah with modern orthodoxy. I think this happens to a lot of teenagers.
English

@DBashIdeas @Historycourses I can't really overstate how unusual I found it when Rabbeim from MO/DL yeshivot came to recruit at Skokie. These people could read a tosfos without a velvet kipa. It was shocking to 17 year old me.
English

@BeltParkway @DBashIdeas Lol by that logic why are you on twitter?
English

@DBashIdeas I dont understand modern orthodox
If someone told you they were paying you $1000 a minute to learn torah for the next week and then it stops and then you can enjoy the money would you not spend every waking hour learning? Would you watch goyim kick around a ball?
English

@DBashIdeas That said I did miss class all through 2010 at Bar Ilan to stay up late and watch the Blackhawks Stanley Cup run ....
English

@DBashIdeas I was in Gush the year of the Tyree catch. I didn't watch it. It was the first super bowl I ever missed (I wasn't learning). I think it was important as a future israeli sports fan to understand that you're not going to be able to keep sports as a huge priority in your life.

@DBashIdeas Skokie Yeshiva has a plaque for someone named Harry Sex in the beis medrash and let me tell you, when you’re 15 that’s just about the funniest thing you can imagine.

@DBashIdeas @mycr_karenina I think the flaw here is that it really believes there's a world where everyone can thrive in Orthodoxy. There are people who the system doesn't work for, and no amount of education or understanding can really change that. Mourn the fact people don't know what theyre rejecting
English

I’ve struggled myself with whether this messaging is inherently patronizing. I’m not so sure. Is it problematic for people to believe one lifestyle is generally better than another or lament general religious apathy? I understand it may come off judgmental but I think there’s also a way this can expressed and received sincerely. But again could be my retrospective bias. 🤷🏻♂️
English

I think that even when I was frum, I could perceive how overwhelmingly patronizing this type of messaging was/is, but maybe that’s just my retrospective bias; it’s been 12 yrs

@GilStudent @TimesofIsrael This is what secular readers know him for. And that’s kinda his fault. Don’t call us “worse than nazis” and expect a glowing obituary 🤷♂️
English

This is disgusting. Shame on @TimesofIsrael. The rabbi was a global leader of the Sephardic community and a lifetime teacher of Torah. This is what they highlight?

English

@daniellebett This seems like a deliberately uncharitable reading. I also would not start a sentence with "Even in Nazi Germany" but she's not giving them brownie points
English

You’re so desperate to collectively blame Palestinians that you’re giving brownie points to… Nazi Germany.
ד״ר עינת וילף Dr. Einat Wilf@EinatWilf
Even in Nazi Germany there were men who tried to assasinate Hitler when it was clear he was leading Germany to ruin. In every Nazi occupied country there were righteous people who saved Jews while risking their lives. Where are the Gazans who are doing anything even close?

@DBashIdeas This is the nicer version of the story of R Eliezer Berkovits meeting R' Moshe...
