re: the AI book being pulled at Hachette - though I agree we shouldn’t let AI ‘books’ be published, how are they making sure to be absolutely 100% certain it was indeed written with AI? Because if there isn’t a definitive system in place this could become very messy for authors

@AustinWyckes From what I’ve seen she’s said her editor used AI in an effort to pass the blame, but that contradicts how editors work. They highlight the issues. They don’t make the changes themselves. That responsibility ultimately lies with the author. Turns out she stole cover art too.

@postler @Aatif_Rashid 1000 books is an incredible achievement for an indie debut, but it doesn't get a publisher's attention. If a big publisher wants your book even after first rights have gone, you've sold tens of thousands and the publisher expects guaranteed returns. You don't need them by then.

I think the root of the problem is that publishers are buying self published slop that sells well without vetting it for quality. This book would probably not have made it through a traditional editing process, but Hachette just wanted a shortcut to a hit.
