@LawProfHolloway @AirCadetAlberta An excellent read. It was enjoyable flying solo over the City of London as a young 17 year old. The cadet program was an amazing stepping stone to a super aviation related career for me which lasted some 40 years. Still helping others enjoy.

@LawProfHolloway @AirCadetAlberta @swakeman I agree! I wholeheartedly attribute my career success so far to the start that I had in Air Cadets. Can't believe that I received my glider wings *half my life ago* this year!

Vistaboard makes a $3500 split-flap ticker
Guy is upset with the price so makes a $199 alternative
Second guy is upset with that alternative so threatens to make a $0 open source alternative
Congratulations code is now worth $0

@ybhrdwj I am very likely going to build this with Claude Code this afternoon and post a link to a free download to this thread, because this is absolutely ridiculous to suggest someone should pay $199 for something that probably took about 18 minutes for Claude Code to make.

Lots of new stats added to my website:

Just finished up a new post about how we are able to still fly commercial aircraft, even when some parts are broken: jameshard.ing/posts/the-mel-…

I’ve been going deep on hardware storage systems! For anyone who wants to put their (small hardware component) problems in a 📦, here is what I’ve found:

Gotta love the cellular provider experience in Canada.
@Rogers increased my bill 37% (discount expired and was only mentioned in small characters in my previous monthly bill).
Then lists plans on rogers.com/plans as if they were available to you but not really. After some more hoop jumping, you cannot get clarity if a listed promotional offer truly applies.
10 years with Fido and 2 years with Rogers about to go down the drain 🚮

@elanashepert Hey Elana! Of course! Happy to DM on here or via email (doesn’t look like Elon lets non-paying users initiate DMs any more 😔)
English

@jdhardng Hi James! Reporter Elana Shepert with V.I.A. here. Can I chat with you about your photos for a story I am working on?

🛫 I am about to depart for the BA85 from LHR to YVR.

@jpvalery @thenewarea51 I actually feed FR24 and FlightAware already with a little raspberry pi installed in my attic! I have built projects that use their "unofficial" API before, but their proper API is quite expensive (and not free for feeders/hobbiests!)
English

@jdhardng @thenewarea51 I’m assuming flightradar or FlightAware API?
(If you plug a raspberry pi with a dongle antenna, and broadcast data to them, you get a business tier account for free)
English

@jpvalery @thenewarea51 Very cool! I wonder where they are sourcing the data from??
I’d love to create an archive of the ADSB traces from my flights for something like this :)
English

@jpvalery I have an Action 5 (which I love!) so I’ve been eyeing the 360 too! Might wait for the 2nd iteration. We aren’t allowed to film at work unfortunately.

@basti_vkl Thanks! If you liked this, did you also see my interactive flying statistics page? #statistics" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">jameshard.ing/pilot#statisti…

Just launched something I've been tinkering with - a visual timeline of my life in weeks 📅
Each colored dot represents a notable moment.
The scary part: weeks pass by at an alarming rate, but they're long enough that they all fit on one page.

@liran_tal @home_assistant Very true! Modern aircraft still use 1970s tech for wireless comms (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACARS) so maybe we will start using Zigbee too in another 30 years haha 🤷♂️
Sweet, I figured it would be something like that, but there are no referrers in my analytics for email traffic!
English

@jdhardng @home_assistant Zigbee will still live long because there are countless of smart home owners with these devices :D
Yeah, I got to it from the Hacker News newsletter. I'm an avid jet fighters fan so I had to dive into your blog ;-)
