Sorry, I’m drunk: We don’t have many “little steps” left to take or make. We won’t be together much longer. She will be taken; though I’ve known it for years, it doesn’t hurt less. She shined in an incredible way – a supernova. I was black-pilled after a terrible divorce complete w/ false accusations & later this woman came along; I was slow to trust & bitter but she made the world bright again. She made me smile. She gave me hope & something to come home to. I think that’s what most men aspire to…something to come home to, some family unit to serve & sacrifice for. I put my own life below my children’s, and below my wife or partner. I will suffer whatever I must for their benefit, and I’ll take satisfaction in doing it. In a weird way, it will make me happy. She is far more than I deserve & now she is wasting away…and I can’t do anything about it, no matter how much I work or suffer. Part of me – maybe a large part – will go with her. I will soldier on for the kids, but she was so beautiful & bright…that light will be gone & I’m not sure what’s left. Now she struggles to get out of bed. Can’t eat besides a bag of liquids hooked to a pump & tube, either. Which is only one of three tubes & bags. Cancer is devouring her. She weighs 80 pounds. She’s still beautiful. I will be lost without her; no purpose or rudder. I was going to show her the world & how to have spontaneous adventures…she’d started learning to non-rev & we made good use of it, but it’s not to be. I’ll carry on for the kids, but I just don’t see anything for me, and I’m tired of being the good soldier & sucking up all the bad shit. So, so tired of “you’ll survive”. I’m sorry. Like I said, I’m drunk. I need to let this stuff out sometimes. Bobby Brown had a great sentiment & my GF danced to it in the video: “Every little step I take, you will be there Every little step I make, we’ll be together” I was against commitments when we met, then skeptical, then hoped & lived for it. I rejoiced in finding a partner like her – she’s just so good. Then I was robbed of it. More importantly, she was robbed of everything. I already mourn for her, and part of that is mourning for all that could have been for her. The world is losing an amazing woman. Just a zombie at this point. Not feeling much of anything. Sorry, drunk musings as I go through my phone. I try not to talk about this, and I am really good when she’s unloading on me, but I don’t have anyone else to share that with & sometimes it builds up. I’m not a threat to anyone or myself; my job actually gives me some joy…but I’m just hurting at home now.

I try to stay in my lane, but every once in a while I’d like to express an opinion outside of it. Don’t worry – I’m not going to tell you how to vote! Ok, here goes: every election cycle, each side whips their base into a frenzy. They do so to get out the vote & make the other side look bad. A simple way to do this is by scaring you…fear is a powerful motivator. They need to tie that fear into something that is going to happen to you, specifically, if you vote wrong, or fail to vote. Maybe it’s “the end of Democracy” or “they’ll put you in camps”. Maybe it’s “they’ll take away your guns”. Doesn’t matter…they just need a short, simple sound bite that’s easily repeatable across a range of settings…the audience themselves will determine the specifics of how the vague threat will manifest, the speaker only needs to plant the seed. The message will be carried by the party faithful & histrionics. Obscure, loosely connected & disputed examples will be dug up to support the claim. Even if the claim is obviously wildly unconstitutional & very improbable, it will be endlessly echoed & used as a bludgeon. Media theoretically has a duty to weed this out & be above it, but that’s not how it’s working in the real world…they are often amplifying it. In this regard, social media is like throwing fuel on a fire. (For the record here, I don’t like what social media is capable of, but the solution is NOT censorship…that is a dark path that ends nowhere good) Some end up staking their identities & happiness to their chosen candidate & party. It’s silly – politicians seek only power – they don’t even know who you are & say whatever they think will help them obtain, preserve or expand their power. That’s why claims get wilder as the election gets closer & the whole thing feels frenetic down to the wire…they have to sustain the enthusiasm. Every election becomes “the most important election in our lifetime”, “not a normal election” or “possibly the last election ever”. How probable is that when you’ve heard it for like the last 20 years every cycle? It’s a dance…politicians know it’s mostly posturing, but it’s gotten to a level that it’s doing real harm to some people mentally. They swallow every slogan & believe every claim…they really do think the world will end if their side doesn’t win. They are not equipped to understand the game being played & politicians don’t care, they just need that vote. Investing your identity in a politician & thinking they “get you” is a fool’s errand, like thinking the stripper really likes you. When the election does end, one side is going to be disappointed & all that energy that’s been whipped up has to go somewhere. We used to be more civil about it & politicians were a bit more careful, but it feels like total war now. That energy has become a powder keg for whichever side loses & it’s dangerous. Vote for whoever you want to, but remember that both sides see you as an asset to exploit, and are saying whatever they need to in order to get to power. Be skeptical of their claims. Be skeptical of the media. Be skeptical of social media. Completely ignore the histrionics & their claims of terrors if politician X is not elected…those people do you no favors & don’t care if they burn you to the ground, as long as you do what they want. They are unmoored. Maybe most importantly…remember that we’re Americans, and neighbors. When the dust settles, we need to be able to work together & take care of each other. We need to be able to give the next generation a country that’s not at war with itself & a chance at a better life. Your neighbor is not your enemy & for politicians to portray them as such is reckless. “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately” (OK, back to your regularly scheduled musings on airplanes)

It is with profound sadness that I have to report the passing away of my good friend, Neil Strong. The @Nomadic_OMD family is devastated by the news of losing one of our best and most loyal pilots. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. On a personal level, I am in shock and very sad. Neil and I have been good friends for over 20 years. We were both from Kentucky and referred to each other cousins. Having grown up in that same KY culture, we instantly trusted and respected each other from the get go. We flew many flights together, and had a drink or two in just about every corner of the earth. Some of the most memorable were to Baghdad during the war, Katmandu, Nepal and taking a plane ride around Mt Everest and visiting the Taj Mahal on a trip to India. We also trained together and obtained a few type ratings together. Neil was one of the few pilots who had more type ratings and had traveled to more places than me. He was type rated and experienced on every thing we fly and would always be there to help me cover a trip…even when it would cost him money by calling in sick from his full time employer to do so. He was an incredibly loyal friend. I’m certain that I’ll hear his voice while I’m flying along, as his spirit will remain in the skies with me forever. Neil was one of my few “inner circle” friends. We went through a lot of life’s rough roads together over the last 20 years. I am going to miss him greatly as a friend and Nomadic will miss him as one of our most experienced pilots. As a tribute, I encourage those of you who flew with him, to post pics of your own adventures with him and share some memories. FYI, Neil was the other pilot on the 777 shown on the last cockpit casual. We had to hide him, as we did on most trips, to avoid him getting into trouble with his airline employer! Neil was recently on some high profile trips like the Air India 747 ferry you all may have seen.
