Brian Chesky runs Airbnb on the same principle that built every dynasty in modern sports.
He just told @patrick_oshag what it is:
"Don't focus on winning. Focus on getting all the inputs perfect."
He learned it from John Wooden, who won 10 NCAA championships in 12 years and never said the words "winning" or "losing" to his players.
The greatest coaches and athletes share the same philosophy.
- Bill Belichick, 6 Super Bowls: "Do your job." Every player owns one input.
- Kobe Bryant: "The mindset isn't about seeking a result. It's about the process of getting to that result. It's a way of life."
- Michael Jordan: "I never looked at the consequences of missing a big shot. When you think about the consequences, you always think of a negative result."
- Nick Saban, 7 national titles: "The more you emphasize winning, the less you can concentrate on what actually causes success."
- Steve Kerr, 4 NBA championships, never sets a goal to win a number of games. Sets process goals like passing the ball 300 times per game.
- Bill Walsh, 3 Super Bowls, wrote a book called "The Score Takes Care of Itself."
- Pete Carroll, Super Bowl plus 2 BCS titles: "Master the elements that are 100 percent under your control."
- Gregg Popovich, 5 NBA championships: "Pound the rock." A stonecutter hits the rock 100 times with no crack. On the 101st it splits. It wasn't that blow. It was every blow before it.
- Vince Lombardi, 5 NFL titles: "We will chase perfection, knowing we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence."
- Roger Federer told the Dartmouth class of 2024 that across his 1,526 career matches, he won 80% of the matches but only 54% of the individual points. The best tennis player in the world loses almost every other point. He just refuses to dwell on the one that's behind him.
50+ championships and 20 Grand Slams across 6 sports across 70 years. None of them coach the scoreboard. All of them focus on the inputs.
Master the inputs and the output becomes inevitable.

confront everything.
confrontation is a superpower. the only skill that actually matters in business, life and relationships. f*ck talent, luck or timing. none of it holds in front of someone willing to walk directly toward the thing everyone else is walking around.
person who avoids confrontation is a coward. small and weak and timid. and they will always stay small because they kept teaching the world what they would accept every time they swallowed the thing that needed to be said.
ask the uncomfortable question. apprehend what the answer reveals. absorb what it costs. accept what it demands of you next. none of them are easy. but they are necessary. without confrontation, people tend to treat you exactly how they treat animals. with pity and false pride. stand up for yourself, once. and boom…everything changes.
confront just once, and watch how quickly everything recalibrates around the new information of who you actually are.
confrontation is too powerful. never abuse its rarity.

"Disappearing for 6 months" is literally the dumbest thing you can do. You will lose most of your contacts, lose leverage across the board, and slowly become irrelevant. People will learn to live without you; that's what humans do. They adapt. And then, when you return, they will perhaps be happy, but you will be demoted to a short 'novelty'. If you truly want to change, do it without the unnecessary disappearing. You're not a ghost.

A lot of people don’t realize that if ya homie win… YOU win. If he gets rich enough to get on a jet, you’ll get on it too. I got a homie who about to create a $200mil/year company. Of course I want him to win. It don’t matter who win first. Because he’ll be able to get me in the rooms to create my own opportunities. I don’t need handouts. Just put me in the rooms, I’ll figure it out. Even if I don’t benefit at all, I got the same 24hours he got.
That’s real man shit. Not hating or wishing others will fail. In fact wanting them to win. Why? Because them winning, is a win for us all.
And that’s how I am. Me winning means everyone associated with me wins. I share and spread love. Facts
