@jeffsangwan @deannagmcdonald I feel like I could argue that having a pro-billionaire speaker could other poor people and a pro-gun speaker could other people who lost someone to gun violence, but I'm gonna digress and say you're a good person and I respect this view very much.

Curious how people feel about this in 2025: Is college a place where ideas that challenge you, even ideas you vehemently disagree with, should be presented in order to help you figure how who you are and what you believe, as well as learning how to defend those beliefs with logic and words? Or do you see the presenting of opposing ideological views as a problem because it’s “platforming” those voices and that can be dangerous?

Giving that type of speech a platform not only tells that group of students that they’re tolerated but not welcomed at that school. But it can also encourage other students to repeat hateful/hurtful rhetoric. Or worse act on it.

@LukeBarnett @deannagmcdonald IMO, no. It’s othering all the trans students at the school, not just the athletes. Pro-guns, fine. Pro-corp tax breaks, whatever. (I clearly am not a fan 😂) Marginalized ppl don’t need to hear “differing” opinions to figure out who they are. They hear it all, on the daily.

@deannagmcdonald @LukeBarnett This part! Opposing views are helpful and good. Opinions that dehumanize other people are absolutely giving a platform to bad actors.

@LukeBarnett depends on the idea. Do want to discuss religion or gun culture? Argue for small government or trickle down economics? Go for it. Or is your ideology more of a “Sandy Hook was a hoax” or “minorities are inferior” thing bc then yeah, I don’t think we should platform.
