1/ Developments in Syria going so fast that reports become obsolete moments later. I've reported from inside Syria since 2011 and I live in the MidEast. So, let me explain in this thread what the implications could be for Syria and wider region in case the Syrian regime falls:

I am pleased to announce that as of today, I have been promoted to full Professor of Law at Tulane Law School. I am so grateful to my colleagues for all of their support over the years. (And, umm, to clarify - this isn't tenure; got that in 2021. Just the title change!)

Powerful letter by German nobelist Herta Muller, with an incisive observation: On October 7, Hamas was trying to show that Israel cannot prevent the Holocaust from happening again on its own soil. OPEN LETTER. truthofthemiddleeast.com/?p=4837

For those who care deeply about #Israel, and are worried about its future, an uplifting pre-Shabbat post from @naftalibennett. !עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל חַי
Naftali Bennett נפתלי בנט@naftalibennett

About 30 minutes ago, two reserve officers from a very, very elite unit arrived outside my house. They asked the security guards to deliver me a letter, but Gilat saw them outside and invited them into my living room. After I brought them a drink (my dog Lychee tipped one of the glasses with her tail, but it's only water) they introduced themselves, and told me about their friends who fell on 7/10. They are 28-29 years old. One is married, the other is now engaged. Both work in high-tech in excellent companies. I asked them how I could help. They answered: "We just did 150 days of reserve service. We fought on 7/10 and lost some of our closest friends. We care about the future of the Jewish state and are ready to leave everything, including our well-paying high-tech careers, to save Israel. We are not interested in money and prestige. As we fought in Gaza, so we are citizens ready to do whatever is necessary to fix Israel. We are people of action, optimistic. Tell us how we can help.' We talked for twenty minutes. This is a generation of lions. Understand, friends: The terrible disaster and the difficult war left a mark on the psyche of this generation. A seal of idealism, action, contribution and love of country. This seal that was burned in the hearts of the younger generation will accompany them for the rest of their lives. It is these values in the hearts and minds of the younger generation that will guarantee us 50 years of prosperity, growth and security. Just as the 1948 generation that came out of the War of Independence, built a state here and performed miracles (the national water carrier, the industries, the great Aliya, the building of towns and cities), so our generation of lions will lead the rebuilding of the State of Israel. I'm confident. How much I love you, people of Israel🇮🇱❤️ Shabbat Shalom. Naftali Bennett

The boycott of Israeli universities is an idiotic betrayal of the values of intellectual life. Philosopher Maarten Boudry explains why punishing scholars who happen to live in Israel is pointless, destructive, and indefensible. quillette.com/2024/06/10/ope…

Would refusing to talk to Daniel Kahneman when he was at Hebrew U have made the world a better place? If I stopped corresponding with 93-year-old Nobelist Robert Aumann about his groundbreaking work in game theory, would Palestinians be better off? The Academic Boycott of Israel is academia at its worst: mindless, demonizing virtue signaling. Open letter for faculty here: unitedagainstacademicboycott.com

My friend, teacher, and @HarvardCorpGov colleague @Bebchuk has some new and sharp things to say about @Tesla corporate governance and @elonmusk 's contested pay package. Take a look!
Lucian Bebchuk@Bebchuk

Rob Jackson and I published on the University of Chicago’s ProMarket forum three posts on the governance of Tesla at this critical juncture: “The Elephant in Tesla’s Boardroom,” available here (promarket.org/2024/06/06/the…),  explains how Musk’s threat to move AI projects outside of Tesla, and the Board’s failure to get Musk to withdraw this threat, may distort the decisions of Tesla investors in the ratification vote this week. “Tesla Investors Deserve Musk’s Attention,” available here (promarket.org/2024/06/07/tes…), shines light on a key flaw of Tesla’s current strategy with respect to Musk’s pay; this strategy would fail, as Tesla has failed in the past, to limit the time and effort Musk spends on endeavors other than Tesla. Rather than ask stockholders to hope that Musk would focus on the company, Tesla’s board should seek contractual limits on the time and effort Musk spend on such outside endeavors. “Tesla is Short on Director Independence,” available here (promarket.org/2024/06/08/tes…), argues that insufficient attention is being paid to the board’s failure to use the coming meeting to bolster board director independence and thereby address the serious “controlled mindset” problem stressed by the court decision. Altogether, the posts in this series show that, in the aftermath of the Delaware court decision invalidating Musk’s large pay grant, Tesla’s Board is not trying to learn form the decision and improve its governance. To the contrary, the Board seems to be doubling down. Any comments would be most welcome! @Tesla @elonmusk @Teslaconomics @andrewrsorkin @ZoharGoshen @RonBaronAnalyst @jimcramer @CathieDWood @evafox @SteveSosnick @neiltyson @SawyerMerritt @ICannot_Enough @TeslaBoomerMama @DogeDesigner @GailAlfarATX @MarioNawfal @dhaval_shroff @jhall @heydave7 @stocktalkweekly @wholemars @medicgordus @RJarborg @KanekoaTheGreat @annmlipton @profEricTalley @Tony_J_Casey #Tesla #ElonMusk #TeslaInvestors #TSLA #ShareholderVote #CorporateGovernance #InvestorInsights

Campus Gaza protests: Selective 'Safetyism' (repressing ideas that make a student uncomfortable) has made colleges less safe, since students never get to hear real debate and can't tolerate disagreement. (By former Harvard student @CarinemHajjar) bostonglobe.com/2024/05/16/opi… via @BostonGlobe

@feldman_yuval They didn't shoot at Jerusalem. There were interceptions over south Jerusalem of missiles heading elsewhere, causing alarms to go off in the city.
