@dandekadt It's part thermostatic decline for wokeness (sped up by Gaza splitting lib coalition here) and part realizing that it is culture war shit not econ policy that has moved non-college workers (eg Biden deliveralism failed). But this is long term & not an explanation of '24 vote.

@MattDickinson44 Would you see him this way if he had lost 16? Plenty of candidates try to hit similar grievances. Trump turned that into a norm busting legacy, but maybe b/c Hillary, Comey, media, or generic D vs R, all of which are potentially orthogonal to Trump's direct appeal.

I focused on a different aspect of Trump's historical significance than did most of my colleagues, probably because I spent so much time listening to supporters at his rallies. #Trump nytimes.com/2024/05/22/opi…

@carlislerainey Saw this randomly on twitter and would love to read. Political scientist by training and manager at J-PAL, where I think a lot about explaining power to various audiences. Jgubb at mit.edu

I’m finishing up a practical paper about statistical power for political scientists. I’m not sure if I’ve written a Twitter thread, academic paper, or something in between. I’d love for a Tweep or two to take a look. LMK if you’d like a really rough first draft.

@dieworkwear New clothes are cheaper than they used to be. Getting things fixed is more expensive. Local vs outsourced labor.

anyway, i asked Przybyszewski why she thinks people don't even repair simple but expensive garments, such as the $150 dress shirt or $300 pants. she said she feels ppl just aren't raised in a material culture where they know how or that this is even possible.

doing a story about why Americans don't mend clothes anymore and was talking to Linda Przybyszewski, author of The Lost Art of Dress. she brought up a really good point: ppl don't mend clothes because clothes have become simpler, which has contributed to their cheapening 🧵

@Pflax1 Rad disc mounts place the caliper too high. As the pads wear, eventually the brake stops working as the un-worn upper portion of the pads make contact and prevent the rotor brake surface from contact with the worn pad. We see this very often on their rear brakes.

Proximity to the intersection when the light is green does not give you permission to go through it when the light is red. This isn’t hard.

@somershade1 What’s the chance of automated enforcement? That seems like the best first step for complicated intersections that rely on compliance to work.

So as always - your safety is your own responsibility. Stay alert. Act as though the drivers are (a) late, angry and frustrated (b) unable to see you (c) unaware or indifferent about the traffic markings.

Displeased to note that drivers still give no shits about the half dozen ‘no left turn’ signs in Inman Square.

@crschmidt My RadCity 5+ just arrived and the e part of the e-bike does not work. No pedal assist or throttle. Have you encountered this yet in the ones you've bought/recommended? Battery and connections are fine. Lights work. Seems like a controller issue.

So, I'd been having a few problems with my RadMission headset feeling "squirrelly". Eventually I got to the point where I figured the headset was simultaneously: 1. Too tight (hard to turn) 2. Too loose (fork wobble). Turns out the bike shipped without a bottom headset bearing.

If you drive to my house to trick or treat I’m giving you these disgusting skittles “smoothies” but if you walk or ride bikes you can pick out as many good candies as you want.

🚨New Paper Alert🚨 @liraneinav, @nealemahoney, Amy Finkelstein and I study the first year of the ESRD Treatment Choice model, a nationwide RCT that provides financial incentives to dialysis facilities and clinicians to increase home dialysis use.
JAMA Health Forum@JAMAHealthForum

A nationwide RCT gives providers financial incentives to inc home dialysis, shows no statistically significant increase in home dialysis, suggesting greater incentives may be necessary to change behavior. ja.ma/3CIj6o6 @YunanJi @nealemahoney

@bizherman We use Asana for most things like this, which I’d recommend. We also use github issues for coding tasks, which are great if you want to record discussion/decisions on the task, but no due dates and less flexible.

We all deserve money from the government and the government has plenty of money. I’ll take mine in the form of a high-speed train named after me.
