Energy Market Highlights: Crude oil remains the primary volatility driver in global energy markets. WTI rallied sharply as traders priced in prolonged disruption risk tied to the US-Iran conflict and the Strait of Hormuz. 1/5

Something interesting happened this week that got buried under the headline noise. China slashed oil imports while the US boosted exports simultaneously. Both the world's largest producer and its largest consumer acted as buffers against the supply shock at the same time. That coordination, intentional or not, is the only thing keeping prices from going higher.

BREAKING: Iran has launched "Hormuz Safe," a Bitcoin-backed insurance service for shipping companies that want to transit the Strait of Hormuz. Details include: 1. The Iranian government says it could generate more than $10 billion in revenue from the program 2. The service will be for "Iranian shipping companies and cargo owners" 3. "The shipment will be covered from the moment of confirmation and signed receipt will be given to the owner," Iran says 4. It is unclear if this insurance service will be charged in addition to tolls, which have been as much as $2 million per ship Iran says an official website with more information is "coming soon."

BREAKING: Trump to decide within the next 24 hours on major military action against Iran, with Israel receiving the final answer in the same window, per Channel 12. A senior Israeli official said the resumption of the war is "near" and Israel is preparing for "several days to several weeks" of fighting. The US and Israel are engaged in the largest joint military preparations since the April ceasefire, with 5,000 Marines and 2,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne in the region awaiting orders for a ground operation against Iran's Isfahan nuclear site to seize enriched uranium, one of the options alongside intense bombing, per NYT.

🚨🇺🇸🇮🇷 Why is the Trump administration willing to risk severe short-term economic pain to keep pushing the war in Iran? Jeffrey Snider argues that the U.S. sees the potential long-term gains in the Middle East as outweighing the immediate disruption, betting that a permanent victory will dismantle China's regional influence and secure American dominance for decades to come. @JeffSnider_EDU
Mario Nawfal@MarioNawfal

🚨🇺🇸🇨🇳 While China's export sectors appear to be booming by shifting goods from the U.S. to European markets, Jeffrey Snider reveals that the domestic system is choking on a massive real estate bubble and unproductive leverage. Built as a temporary bridge after the 2008 crash, this mountain of bad debt has left the Chinese banking system incredibly vulnerable as a global economic slowdown takes hold. "China got big, but it never got big enough." @JeffSnider_EDU

Iran is building a parallel settlement mechanism through Hormuz tolls. Yuan channels, yen settlements, fragmentation at every layer. The opacity is getting worse with every crisis. Our Co-founder Baron Lamarre broke it down for MarketWatch 👇 marketwatch.com/story/they-ess…

April CPI just came in at 3.8% year over year, highest since May 2023. Gasoline up 28% annually. Energy accounted for over 40% of the monthly increase. And for the first time in three years, inflation is eating up all wage gains. Real hourly wages fell 0.3% annually. The Fed has no room to ease. A new chair takes over today, they inherit an economy where an oil conflict is doing the tightening for them.

🇮🇱🇱🇧🇺🇸 While Trump is in China, the 3rd round of Israel-Lebanon talks are kicking off in D.C. The U.S. has assembled a team of Mikes: Mike Huckabee (U.S. Amb. to Israel), Michel Issa (U.S. Amb. to Lebanon), and Mike Needham (State Dept. aide). Israel brought Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, Deputy National Security Advisor Yossi Draznin, and Brigadier General Amichai Levin. Lebanon is represented by chief negotiator Simon Karam, Ambassador Nada Hamadeh, and Brigadier General Oliver Hakmeh. Lot of important people in that room… let’s hope they can set egos aside and do some good for the region. Source: @ThisIsBeirut_

🇸🇦🇮🇷 Saudi is quietly floating a Middle East non-aggression pact modeled on the 1970s Helsinki Process as a framework for managing Iran once the war ends. - Riyadh is discussing the idea with Gulf allies, anticipating a weakened but still dangerous Iran once U.S. forces scale back - The Helsinki model eased Cold War tensions in Europe through confidence-building measures and mutual commitments, not alliances - Gulf states are concerned about being left alone with a wounded, more hardline Iran once American military presence shrinks - The non-aggression pact is one of several ideas being considered, not a firm proposal The war is not over. The Gulf is already planning for what comes after. Source: Financial Times

Oil reservoirs are not one uniform pool, different layers sit at different depths, formed under different conditions over millions of years. Each layer has its own chemical makeup, and that determines API gravity. Two wells in the same field drilling into different formations can produce crude that trades at a completely different price.

⚡️ Trump has arrived in China — the first visit by a U.S. president to Beijing since 2017 A day earlier, the U.S. president said Washington does not need China’s help on Iran. According to Trump, the U.S. will “win one way or another — peacefully or otherwise.” A meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping is scheduled for tomorrow. The talks are expected to focus on reducing tensions between the countries, as well as the ongoing trade confrontation, which in recent years has escalated into a full-scale economic war. Elon Musk and Tim Cook are accompanying Trump.
