Iowa State 5am - 6am early practices and then another practice in afternoon I’ll keep saying it! Players will respond to whatever you set the mark at for them. If you let them be soft they will, if you hold them accountable they will respond!

@bballbreakdown Kids need honesty. Kids need truth tellers. Kids need standard bearers. Kids need transformational coaches. And yes… sometimes that comes with intensity. And that’s ok.

5 things coaches don’t like: 1. Excuses. 2. Entitlement. 3. Anti-team behavior. 4. Poor body language. 5. Blaming refs and teammates. Coaches can handle mistakes. They can’t handle losing mindsets.

As an AD, I remind our athletes: no one cares how fast you are if you’re running the wrong way. No one cares about your velo if you can’t throw strikes. No one cares if you can draw a foul if you can’t make free throws. If you can’t do the basics, you won’t be effective.

What one person considers to be good coaching is bad coaching to another and average coaching to a third person. It’s a good reminder to be yourself as a coach. Authenticity is important.

Culture rarely explodes. It erodes. One skipped rep. One eye roll. One excuse. Drip by drip. Great coaches protect the standard before the damage spreads.

As a head coach, every decision you make should have this as your #1 priority….What’s best for the kids? In hiring, firing, schemes, facilities…you name it. Sometimes this forces us to swallow our pride but pride has been the downfall of many a coach. It’s not about “us” as coaches. Simply put, the decisions you make should always be in the best interest of the team and your players.

Hard coaching without relationship produces resentment. Relationship without hard coaching produces entitlement. The sweet spot is a player who knows you love them and knows you will not lower the bar for them.

Stop coaching outcomes. Coach behaviors. Outcomes are unpredictable. Behaviors are trainable. Build the behaviors and trust the outcomes to follow.

Attention to detail. This is where athletes begin to stand out because they do the small things consistently — the things many players overlook. It looks like: • Sprinting on and off the field • Listening carefully when coaches are giving instruction • Treating every practice rep like it matters • Following up with college coaches during recruiting • Preparing before games and practices • Moving with urgency instead of needing to be told twice None of these things require more talent. They require discipline, awareness, and pride in how you operate.

The difference between wisdom and stupidity is often just one thing: The humility to receive correction. “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.” Proverbs 12:1

Kids don’t care where you coached, who you coached or how many degrees you have. They just want a coach who truly cares about them & knows how to make learning the game a lot of fun! They absorb more & it’s so much more meaningful when they’re enjoying it than when they aren’t!

The greatest leaders I’ve been around were all able to say…”I don’t know the answer, but I’ll figure it out”. Too many leaders have to be the “smartest” in the room at all times, and that’s just not always the case….humility wins. Always. #WordsofChizdom
