Judges have the power to take someone’s freedom, enforce or overturn laws and correct or perpetuate injustices. Before you vote, read up on the judges running for retention in Cook County. @injusticewatch's guide makes it easy: buff.ly/3CgjXyv

@acabylonbee The funny thing is that they could easily go and do this, they would just be poor. . . Like people who did this 100 years ago were. I'm forced to get a degree in order to enjoy the life to which I have become accustomed.

New statement from Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein: "We respect the traditional independence of the editorial page, but this decision 11 days out from the 2024 presidential election ignores the Washington Post's own overwhelming reportorial evidence on the threat Donald Trump poses to democracy. Under Jeff Bezos’s ownership, the Washington Post’s news operation has used its abundant resources to rigorously investigate the danger and damage a second Trump presidency could cause to the future of American democracy and that makes this decision even more surprising and disappointing, especially this late in the electoral process."

On political endorsement wapo.st/3YmeD3T This is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty. @realdonaldtrump will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner @jeffbezos (and others). Disturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.

Newspaper endorsements don’t matter. What does matter is that the billionaires who own our country’s newspapers apparently feel afraid to take even such a milquetoast stand against Trump, despite (or rather, because of) him running his most overtly fascist campaign yet.

The “Democracy Dies in Darkness” newspaper refusing to endorse in an election where one candidate incited an insurrection and called for the termination of the Constitution is the clearest indication yet of the rot that has pervaded our media.

Two things probably true: 1. WaPo's decision not to endorse is pretty clearly motivated by craven business/access concerns, not any kind of editorial principle, which is a bad sign. 2. It will almost certainly make no difference in the outcome of this election
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

"Our newspaper never publishes presidential endorsements, and this year is no exception" is a defensible principle "So, our editorial director wrote an 2024 endorsement for Kamala Harris, and then some high-up folks read it, and then the endorsement was killed, and then our publisher announced that we're not endorsing presidents ever again" sure sounds like ... another thing

A WaPo endorsement for president had been written and was ready to publish before Jeff Bezos decided the paper would not endorse.

When major newspapers begin pre-emptively to self-censor you can no longer trust their content. My parents saw this when the Sovs occupied Estonia. Friends from a number of once liberal democracies have seen it. We always see it in the dimming crepuscular light before a country goes dark. 1/n

Jeff Bezos made an editorial decision based solely on the interests of his other businesses when he directed the #washingtonpost to not endorse Kamala Harris. A stunning loss of legitimacy. All the reporting work is tainted. #CancelWaPo

@_nomadic_soul Like, I don't support a unitary masculinity, and am far from a gender essentialist, but imagine being so broken, you think he is the apogee.

Nobody should feel sorry for Philip Schofield. He's not lost his human dignity, he's just been found out as behaving in a sexually predatory fashion. He's got millions in the bank and his family to console him.
