I’m thinking out loud about networking, mentorship, and CVs. Posting as I work through it. All perspectives welcome. #MedTwitter

I remember finally sending my CV out to a mentor when I was an assistant professor, with a “keeping you updated on my career” message in tow. Then three days later learning my R21 was to be funded. Doh! #MedTwitter #AcademicTwitter

This is the face when asked to give grand rounds to colleagues in Bermuda 🇧🇲… but virtually 🤦‍♂️ in the cold winter of the mid-Atlantic.

Cannot believe the Blocks are shutting down a paper that’s more than a century old, leaving Pittsburgh without its top newspaper because the courts ruled they had to honor a contract with the union. Nobody wins here, but the entire Pittsburgh region & a whole lot of workers lose

Ok. Let’s talk about CVs. At this point in my career, I’ve built one that I’m pretty proud of…if I can keep track of the right version. Who has a better file naming conventions than final_final_v3.doc? #MedTwitter #AcademicTwitter

@allisonoconn So true! Feeling/being undervalued can lead to burnout which makes it even more challenging to care for patients and conduct meaningful research. It is not being greedy!

This whole “is academia a job or a calling” nonsense is silly. It’s obviously both and neither. It’s a privilege to work with patients and on interesting questions and people are called to make a difference. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know your worth and value your time.

Here's a map of my global research collaborations! Interesting, apart from North America, most of my research collaborators over the years have been from the Netherlands! Check out this free tool to visualize your research co-authors and collaborators 👇 livewrite.app/map-my-coautho…

@oncology_bg We technically have the NIHMS system which creates a PMCID with full text access. Indeed, pubs which result from NIH funding are supposed to uploaded to that system. How many PIs comply?

I am going to continue to fight for this. All government/public funded research should by default be open access. Such an important trial- funded by public money- cannot stay behind a paywall. Public funded the research, now they should pay to read the results? Doesn't make sense. nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

@hjluks Well said. This is so critical for young surgeons/trainees to understand. I would add to this that the largest surgeries, though often the most interesting , may not always be the highest value, especially when considering risk exposure, etc. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41115311/

After 30 years, my perspective has simplified... Surgery is a remarkable tool. But like any tool, it’s only as effective as the hands that wield it, the decisions that precede it, and the actions that follow it. You cannot ignore frailty, metabolic health, systemic inflammation, muscle mass, cognitive function, depression, unrealistic goals, and so much more... and expect all will be well. The operation is only the beginning. The outcome is the journey. And the real healing happens outside the OR. The real result is determined before and after surgery.

For the 4th year in a row, our lab, alongside amazing collaborators, delivered 40+ high-quality manuscripts. Not surprising when 7 manuscripts landed on my desk during researchers’ time off these past few days!! Exceptional work ethic. Relentless dedication. #BariatricSurgery

Ok professionals/academics? How much time to you actually spend updating your CVs? Do you have a system in place, or do you scramble last minute after someone asks for it?
