You only go to prison if you are remanded into custody for serious offences (murder etc.) or are convicted of a crime with a custodial tariff. We don't have cash bail here either.

You get taken to a police station here, not a jail, get an interview, wait in the cell for a few hours until the CPS decide on what charges (if any) you face and are either remanded or bailed. Most people get bail.
