There are enormous unanswered questions, which include not only speed on the terrain of the Appalachian Trail, but food, rest stops, camping supplies, and the weight of what she was carrying, if anything. Did she meet other parties with vehicles, clothing change, food supply, etc. at access points and road crossings? If you have ever hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail carrying everything with you in a 25 lb pack on your back (which I did as a young person) then you know what's involved, and it makes 54 miles per day a number that requires considerable explanation beyond the velocity itself. Group travel of 20 miles per day for about 6.5 hours per day, even in non-mountainous terrain, is a good yardstick for a very dedicated pace, especially on a long journey. A lot of unspoken details need to be spelled out in this story. There had to be a significant support framework around such an achievement, including documentation that can be provided to Guinness Book of World Records.

31-year-old Tara Dower just became the fastest person to complete the 2168 mi/3489 km Appalachian Trail. Averaging 54 miles per day, Dower completed the trail in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes.
