In these dark times for our country I believe it is crucial to remember that there were once great men and great historical moments on this land. People who despite finding themselves in an imperfect world and imperfect country achieved feats that reverberate through time forever. In my estimation, one of these great moments in our national history is undoubtedly the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The fastest people and Information could travel had remained completely unchanged since the time of Alexander the Great. But with the completion of the 1,911 mile transcontinental railroad, this was changed forever. A man could now span the entirety of the North American continent in a mere 7 days. But while the railroad itself is undoubtedly impressive and world historical, what is perhaps even more impressive is the circumstance under which it was completed. From 1863 to 1869, men by their thousands labored across thousands of miles of wilderness, braving sheer mountains, endless prairies, the hottest deserts in the world, endless forests. The identity of these people who achieved what was once considered impossible speaks volumes on what America means. These workers came from all across the world. Among them were Irish, Chinese, Germans, Frenchmen, newly freed blacks, Scotts. From every corner of our great country and the world they came, they labored together, suffered together, and accomplished together. One should also remember that amongst these men were former enemies. Brothers who had so recently been engaged in a bloody civil war which threatened to destroy our republic and its aspirations for good. But on that rail line, in that wilderness all these men found themselves as brothers, in a common struggle against the forces of nature itself. Ultimately we should remember and uphold the dream these men were building. A dream that mankind would be connected, that our country would not be hindered by distance and separation. That the railroad itself is the ultimate testament to man’s desire for togetherness and comradeship!

WAKEFIELD, MA: On March 28, ACP Mass joined Teamsters Local 3 on strike at a Smurfit Westrock corrugated paper plant, bringing Dunkin’ coffee and donuts to the line. These 60 workers are fighting for higher wages, affordable healthcare, and no cuts to retirement. The company has refused to negotiate, and now plans to close the plant in May. Since a 2024 merger, the Ireland-based Smurfit Westrock corporation has laid off over 4,600 plant workers from California to Quebec in the name of “optimization." While the Fed's higher interest rates have made the merger's debt payments more expensive, shareholders still demand higher returns, and the result is dramatic, anti-human cost-cutting. Real economic optimization isn't shutting down productive assets and leaving people without work on a financial whim. It would be giving the workers the right of first refusal, public investment in infrastructure to lower the cost of manufacturing, building resilient, locally-based supply chains, and using automation to create free time for workers rather than unemployment. In the face of this threat, the Teamsters aren’t backing down. They’re ready to strike through to the summer to defend their livelihoods, and the ACP is ready to stand with them.
