It seemed like a good idea at the time. Chosen over the F-15 (had to throw that in), in the 1970s, under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran ordered 80 Grumman F-14A Tomcat fighters to counter Soviet MiG-25 threats. The $2 billion deal, called Project Persian King, included hundreds of AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, spare parts, and support. It was the largest foreign arms sale in US history at the time and helped keep the F-14 program and Grumman afloat after US funding cuts. 79 aircraft reached Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution halted the rest. Sad.☹️
