US fertility reached 1.57 last year, the lowest ever recorded, and the WSJ explanation is "uncertainty about finances, relationship stability, and the political climate"
my great grandma had eleven children during the second world war, in a country being bombed, in a house with no running water, on rations.
poor people have always had kids. the poorest people on earth right now still have kids and the financial excuse is a story we tell ourselves because it makes us feel good and the real one is unbearable
the real mechanism is that we got rich enough to redefine children as an expense instead of the point. somewhere in the last fifty years the cultural goal inverted and a child stopped being what life is for and became a line item competing with the lifestyle. once you frame it that way the math never works, because the math isnt supposed to work. that's the point
we are living in the richest moment in human history and we decided to use the surplus to buy ourselves out of the future. the most prosperous civilization that has ever existed is committing demographic suicide at the altar of personal optimization and comfort, and the official line is that we cant afford it
the birthrate is a lagging indicator of a civilization that forgot why it was alive

Two-thirds of wild-caught fish rot before they ever reach a plate.
@ShinkeiSystems built Poseidon, a mini-fridge sized robot, to fix that. Ike-jime. Six seconds. Commercial scale. On American fishing boats. What used to require a master’s hand at a $400 omakase counter is now automated on deck.
Their mission is our purpose. And they’re hiring.
Serious hardware requires serious engineers.

@wholemars Well my reasoning was more math related. Bought a 2025 X in the 6 seat option. When I bought it, I was able to get the 6 seat configuration ($6,500) for free with the purchase of FSD. So I got FSD and 6 seat configuration for 8K instead of 14,500. Felt right to do it that way

@_delconte Ran into a bug looking at premium football seating. When trying to 'learn more' about the Longhorn Lounge via a chat, I am redirected to the Denver Broncos premium seating website. Here's a video: awesomescreenshot.com/video/48142228…

@LoewyLawFirm They need to, very simply, build an algorithm publicly sourced in the off season, then give that algorithm with weights to a computer like BCS era, and remove human bias from making the decisions. That’s about it
English

What a total embarrassment this system is.
It’s just unbelievable how dumb the people who run CFB continue to be.

We’re all arguing about Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame and overlooking that TWO groups of 5 schools are occupying spots when they have zero business playing in it this year. Tulane lost 45-10 to Ole Miss. JMU only played ONE P4 school and lost by 14. What a mess
English

@HulkCapital So if you’re young (say a toddler) is putting a little bit of money into it now a smart decision to capitalize on long term growth of bitcoin?
English

@AJA_Cortes We’ve started using a healthshare plan (liberty healthshare) and while we have to do a little bit more legwork up front, we are saving so much money on costs. Normal health insurance killed us
English

Cost of health insurance is out of control
$2-4k+ a month
And unless youre visiting the doctor constantly, its money paid out that essentially unused and lost
-Dont care about the "its for an EMERGENCY" lecture
Youd get better ROI on hiring a concierge doctor team and optimizing your familys health

@NashTalksTexas It’s been bad for a few years, too. I’m hoping we can right the ship, but for being an “offensive guru” five years in still struggling in the red zone is tough to stomach.
English

@elonmusk the main difficulty/confusion I have now is understanding my monthly premium if I switch to tesla insurance.
If the monthly premium adjusts for your driving once you have it, can we get an idea of that adjustment before based on our FSD driving? The base rate currently is high

A 0-1 record can't stop The Reheat from coming back. We microwave and react to Ohio State over on @insidetexas. Schadenfreude of the week, along with Sark's redzone woes and where the hype train is at. on3.com/teams/texas-lo…

English

@billyliucci Oh I agree. Can’t be an offensive guru and not have an offensive team in big games. We’ve needed a new play caller
English

@BON_SBNation We need a new play caller, especially in the red zone. But arch also needs to hit the easy throws
English

@SawyerMerritt I’m also genuinely wondering how FSD and robotaxis work with kids in car seats — my whole life right now
English

@SawyerMerritt It might be that they have a different, new model in mind for families? I’ve got three kids and we went for the X since the Y was too small. Even the Y L I think doesn’t have quite the room we would look for.
Minivan maybe? Less luxurious X?
English

I'm a little surprised by this.
I think the Model Y L would sell extremely well in North America, even with the advent of self-driving. Americans love their larger SUVs. Bigger families here want the Model Y L. There is a need in North America for larger all-electric SUVs at a more affordable price. Delaying the Model Y L launch by a year, or possibly not producing it here at all, I think would be leaving a lot on the table.
There are going to be scenarios where a larger family with luggage wants to ride together in a self-driving robotaxi rather than separately in different Cybercabs. I think the Model Y L fits this scenario perfectly since it has the extra room and comfort features versus the current Model Y, but is cheaper to produce than the Model X.
Elon Musk@elonmusk
@wholemars This variant of the Model Y doesn’t start production in the US until the end of next year. Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America.
