@MatthaeusWare @davidcarr333 Honest questions: is there data that applicants with MD parents do worse on objective testing (GPA, MCAT), but still get into Canadian med schools at a higher rate than non-MD parents? Given kids are more likely to chose a parent’s profession across many fiends… (1/2)

I spent an evening on call with the St. Michael's Hospital trauma team and wrote about what it's like behind the scenes when a trauma case comes in during the summer season. @UnityHealthTO unityhealth.to/2024/06/inside…

@raghu_venugopal Our hematologists are amazing at writing specific, concise instructions to treat bleeding in hemophiliac patients. I’m always grateful, it is incredibly helpful. @sholzberg

Dear oncology: in 1 plain sentence, at the top of your note can you write: the cancer; when it was dx'd/recurred; where they are in their Rx; current complications; goals of care. I can't rapidly figure things out in the ER chaos. This is how I can best serve the patient.

@raghu_venugopal I’m proud to have colleagues who make social justice a focus of their careers, and as urban emergency physician we are all involved in advocacy as a core tenet of our job. But to suggest a shift in training from medical expert to advocate is incredibly irresponsible in my view.

When nurses in sub-Saharan Africa present to me comatose infants on the ward rounds or like last night in the ER the nurses overhead call for "emergency physician STAT to resuscitation" they are not looking for social justice - they are looking for a medical expert. So is the patient and family. But this is not to diminish the important of social justice. Medicine is the hammer to pound to the nail of social justice (this is why I wanted to be a doctor and get the best training I could), but you need the war hammer of Thor forged strong. Dr. Philip Berger is the epitomy of the fiduciary relationship between patient and doctor. I have walked many streets with him and in a world where there is much fog, he is my signpost. He fought for social justice his entire career and no one can question his social justice credentials. I join him in strongly supporting CanMEDS and MD training be centered on Medial Expert first. Social justice is something Dr. Berger and I both support in real life and it is Physician as Medial Expert that is MD's unique contribution to our humanity. - 2/2

In rural Congo with MSF or with my Toronto homeless patient with a critically winter injured foot requiring amputation, the legitimacy and foundation of my social justice and advocacy efforts is my medical expertise and medical action. - 1/2 thestar.com/opinion/contri…

The dates of #retrieval2024 fixed and confirmed as 2nd and 3rd May 2024. Just need to firm up plans for the pre-conference outing, Loch Lomond has been a fans’ favourite over the years…our activity scouts are out assessing the options! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😎 #SaveTheDate

Probs the best radiology report I’ve read. So far. Radiologists, we need more poetry in our lives. How about something like “the parenchyma is clear as a cold winter day” or “Fluid levels stack Trapped belches in otherwise Gasless abdomen” You know? @HumanFact0rz @jlock813

First three months of my ICU fellowship done and here’s what I’ve gathered so far. 1. I know nothing (or close to). This is primarily why I love medicine but thank god for junior learners asking me questions I can actually answer otherwise I’d have no confidence. 1/

@raghu_venugopal I’m glad you haven’t stereotyped all Albertans from one bad experience! If you were to go back I think you’d find Calgary a much more diverse, inclusive society. Also a place where a working class family can comfortably afford a home, with a reasonable commute, in a good area.

I know many lovely Albertans. But I never forget as a born and raised Maritimer having an interview for residency in Calgary and the interviewing doctor kindly tell me “you’re not redneck enough” to train and work here. I did not return. thestar.com/opinion/star-c…

1/4 For a week, I've been trying to get @OntarioHealthOH to tell me how many hospital ER closures there have been over the past several months. They told me that 17 hospitals had experienced closures but would not say how many actual closures these hospitals had.
