I do agree with this, to an extent. I believe mathematicians are excellent problem solvers, and would thus be good at software engineering.
I used to say this exact quote to myself, but it was to my detriment. It opened the door to an "any means necessary" mentality, where I ended up leaning on resources such as AI to solve problems as fast as possible without actually familiarizing myself with both the issue and the solution.
In my opinion, it is more important to know how what makes a strong boat than it is to patch holes when things go wrong. That's why engineers get paid the big bucks and maintainers don't.
The best coders are the best problem solvers, no doubt. Just make sure you're not only solving problems, but also taking the time to learn so you can prevent more in the future.
