Two aircraft. Closing speed: over 1,000 mph. Separation: exactly 1,000 feet. This was taken somewhere on the long night home from Delhi, a long exposure capturing another aircraft passing directly overhead. What looks calm and almost choreographed is anything but simple. At cruise, both aircraft are typically travelling at around 450–500 knots. That means the relative closing speed can exceed 900–1,000 mph. The moment you see here lasted seconds… blink and it’s gone. And yet, we pass each other like this all the time. Why? Because modern aviation is built on extraordinary precision. Both aircraft are navigating using highly accurate GPS and inertial systems, following defined airways who’s width is measured not in miles, but in tens of feet laterally. We are effectively flying along invisible tracks in the sky, stacked above and below each other. The key safeguard is vertical separation: a minimum of 1,000 feet between aircraft at these levels. So while it might look close… and it is, in human terms. In aviation it is precisely planned, continuously monitored, and entirely safe. What this image captures is something we rarely get to see, not just another aircraft, but the invisible structure of the sky itself. A system where hundreds of aircraft can cross continents overnight, separated by little more than altitude, yet operating with remarkable accuracy and trust. Controlled chaos. Perfect order. Can you see the other 3 aircraft also in this picture? #PilotLife #A350 #AvGeek #FlightDeckView #AboveTheClouds #AviationPhotography #AirTrafficControl #GPS #LongHaul #NightFlying #Airways #ModernAviation #NoFilter

@AldiUK , bought a pack of two fillet steaks for Valentine’s night. A terrible decision. They looked lovely, but when I turned one over it was a layer of fat. Turned out the fat was all the way through. I buy all my meat @AldiUK and have never been let down before.

The same year this trusted Antonov AN-12 (currently enroute Alta, Norway) rolled off the factory line, England won their first (and only) FIFA World Cup title, and The Beatles released their album Revolver. What year are we talking about? flightradar24.com/CVK7035/3d151a…

@coopuk in a world where we are trying to eliminate single use plastics, is it really necessary that scotch rolls are all put into plastic bags in store so that allergy stickers can be put on each one? Are customers so ill informed that they can’t read a posted notice?

Dr Helen Fry | WWII Historian
She crossed Nazi-occupied Europe on foot and smuggled Allied soldiers over the Pyrenees mountains. She outsmarted the Gestapo and was only 25 years old at the time. Her name was Andrée De Jongh. This is the story of a heroine who co-built a WW2 secret escape line: (🧵)
