You guys understand we’re going to lose the birthright citizenship case, right? Before you completely freak out, the traditional understanding of the 14th Amendment, which we are seeking to change, is not an insane reading of it. Nor are our arguments insane like the left has been same. That’s baloney to just shut us up. Neither side is frivolous. It’s a tough call legally and objectively speaking. But when we lose it, and I think we will, don’t freak out that this is some sort of conspiracy. It’s a hard legal decision. Sadly, we have three judges who aren’t even going to try to examine the question and will always vote for what leftists want. But the rest of the court has to make a tough legal call. I think our reading is the correct one. For various reasons, I think they’re going to rule against us. Don’t freak out when they do. It’s not an utterly irrational ruling like so many of the district court opinions we’ve seen.

Fun fact: In 2005, Ireland ended birthright citizenship with 79% of voters in favor of the amendment. Birth-tourism, the act of travelling while pregnant so that the child born abroad automatically gains citizenship there, was the catalyst for the decision.

It just feels so painfully obvious that the 14th amendment does not mean that a 9-months pregnant woman from Mexico can cross the Rio Grande illegally, give birth, and be allowed to stay because her child is now a natural born citizen.

Justice Barrett appears skeptical of Trump's argument against birthright citizenship: One thing that's puzzling me about your argument when I think about the ratification of the 14th Amendment, it would have made sense for them to say 'we'll make it all ride on parentage.' It also says 'born in the US.' I take it you are not arguing that US citizens who have children born abroad would qualify for birthright citizenship. If they were going to invent an entirely new kind of citizenship, like an American brand, why wouldn't we have seen more discussion of that in the debates?

Last Sunday afternoon I was sitting in the Old Absinthe House (NOLA) having a drink with about 12-15 strangers. "American Pie" by Don McLean came on. Pretty soon 8-10 of us were standing and singing our hearts out to that song!! I almost got my camera out to record it, cause it so random, and cool. But I didn't. I just relished the moment. I'm glad I didn't record it. But also, I wish I would have that memory in another format than "just" my memory. It was a beautiful thing. A 70 year old man said "I just shed a tear!" That's how cool it was. A 45 or so year old walked around the room introducing himself to everyone. Music. I love it.

There's basically no difference between this and the exact same kinds of "dumb spring breaker" videos you'd see 10 years ago or 20 years ago or 30 years ago. I actually don't mind the fact that a bunch of 18 and 19 year old kids are totally ignorant about world affairs. That's healthier than obsessively doomscrolling alone in your basement or whatever. The problem is that these kids can vote. We should all just agree that 19 year olds are stupid and don't know anything, and that's basically fine, but it's also why they shouldn't be able to vote. Raise the voting age to 25.
