He is not wrong. Although the G7 is moving towards reducing fossil fuels, the pace is too slow. Consider that even last year coal is still 35% of world electricity production. But even if the G7 were decarbonizing faster, most of the increase in demand for energy is coming from 3rd world countries where the middle class is defined as earning $20,000 US per year. Those countries’ middle class populations are increasing faster than the G7, and they want air conditioning, running water & a car. At $20k per year the car won’t be electric. It will be a new small 4 cylinder or a used G7 vehicle. The biggest problem though is their electric grid. The G7 countries need to rebuild their own grids to enable more electric use and that is going to be expensive. Those 3rd world countries don’t have the government revenue to do that and their existing grid cannot support sufficient electricity use to replace coal & oil. Even if they could, there is not enough metal available for the G7’s grid rebuild, meaning metal costs will rise dramatically in the next few years. Finally, the IEC still expects we will need 30 million barrels a day even if we meet 2050 objectives. Oilcos will focus on elephant sized fields near/on water. Newfoundland fills that bill.
