@NikosMohammadi I made one for this exact same reason. I'm home for the Summer so I have toyed with the idea of trying to interview Camille Paglia because she lives in my area but what's the point, who would read it?

Sorry if I sound bitter, but not everyone needs to have their own Substack. I am culpable, of course — I use it to publish pieces that have been rejected from a few places and that I “give up” on — but come on now.

@gietzschean The Jefferson Memorial was built in a Restrained neo-classical style not Beaux-Arts, that would be more like the Library of Congress

Before art deco became the dominant architectural style, there was Beaux-arts.

@ShawnChittle I used to live by Sursum Coda. Interesting backstory. It was founded by do-good Jesuit priests from St. Aloysius back in the 60s as affordable housing but quickly went to hell. So bad even the nuns had to move out. It was bulldozed because a girl was killed execution style there

@DanielDiMartino Reminds me of a inter-denomotional school I visited on an academic trip to Northern Ireland that had Pride Flags everywhere and a middle-aged principal that had her cleavage out who tut-tuted a boy who mentioned he goes to Church in his free-time. too sectarian apparently

@willanselme I just want people to stop wearing sweatpants to Mass (Being back home in my childhood suburban parish really puts things back into perspective after being in the DC bubble)

I find the (predominantly American convert) obsession with the idea that the Mass is invalid unless one dresses like a non-speaking extra from Brideshead utterly tragic. I say this as somebody who dresses like a non-speaking extra from Brideshead for everything other than Mass.
Religious Sailor Moon@tradcatboy

Derbys are a casual outdoors shoe. Please do not wear them with a suit to Mass. These shoes are basically superfluous now, they’re not formal enough to wear to anything serious, and we have better informal options. Just delete them from your wardrobe.

@markdtooley True but the neoclassical city is also now littered with glass and concrete boxes. Jarring contradictions in the urban landscape

@BuckThrockmort There was some movement on conservative urbanism back in the 90s with Giuliani and the like. Maybe Spencer Pratt offers the way back home

@posta_octavian I never understood conservatives who made gay marriage a big culture war issue but also says nothing about no-fault divorce, which seems to have more of an actual material impact on people's lives, especially children

Opposing gay marriage was/is one of the biggest conservative Ls ever. Legalising it has: - raised the prestige of monogamous long-term marriages among gay men - made being gay less of a clandestine secret culture - integrated gay men as productive members of society with many positive effects So everything conservatives *should* want came from its legalisation, despite it having been something they opposed.
Hunter📈🌈📊@StatisticUrban

There are early signs that monogamy is on the upswing once again, even amongst groups that are currently less monogamous than average.

@johnddavidson It's interesting to note that both left-wing critical theorists and right-wing nationalists converge on this topic because they recognize America had a core culture that latter arrivals scaffolded on.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we should not be afraid to say with confidence that America is not merely a creed or a proposition, but a people. And as for the founding, let’s have no more of this falsehood that we were “founded by immigrants.” The English colonists did not cross the Atlantic to join a new people or assimilate into a new culture. They came to plant the culture of England on these shores, and that’s exactly what they did.

@roddreher JPII in Love and Responbility wrote about how sexual ethics is a conduit for proper justice in general I.e. viewing people as objects of desire begets an egotistical understanding of justice

Classic liberal Catholicism: the idea that one has to choose either "pelvic theology" or "social justice". Philip Rieff, an agnostic Jew, called it in 1966: the rejection of the Christian sexual model is a sign of the rejection of Christianity as a social phenomenon. nytimes.com/2026/05/22/opi…

The Greco-Roman-Renaissance-Gilded Age response to having a massive capital surplus was to make it hyper-legible through Splendor and Magnificence. The aristocracy transformed fortunes into exquisite private homes (splendor) and public and enduring works (magnificence) because to do so was a virtue. Grindslop is its opposite.

@glukianoff I graduated from Georgetown last week and Mary Beard was the commencement speaker. The way she described the University was basically to cultivate enclosing self-reference instead of searching for truth, probably because they don't believe it can exist objectively

A university is not a mirror. Students do not need a better-lit reflection of themselves. They need exposure to people who know things they don’t, see things they miss, and may even be wrong in useful ways.

When you see a Black actor cast to play a character described as fair-haired in an ancient epic poem, there's a clear agenda at work — an agenda to claim canonical works as the common patrimony of the entire West, and that's good! slowboring.com/p/a-diverse-od…
