Used EVs are taking off. The EV market isn’t slowing down, it’s just misunderstood and talked about by people that don’t understand the full picture. They focus on one topic at a time, finding negatives and pretending it sets the tone for the whole industry. Everyone keeps pointing at new car sales, discounts, targets… But that’s not where the real story is. The real story is happening underneath👇 The UK new car market has always been fleet-led. Fleets and company cars, have always driven early adoption. And there’s a rule in the motor trade: “You can’t make a used car, you have to grow it.” That’s exactly what’s happening with EVs right now. If you actually want to understand real consumer demand, you don’t look at new cars… You look at used cars. Because that’s where: • There are fewer incentives • Less manufacturer influence • Real buyers making real decisions And the data? It’s VERY clear. Used EV demand grew by 50% last year (Auto Trader data). They’re now the fastest-selling used cars in the UK. 27 days to sell vs 30–34 days for petrol. That’s not a struggling market. That’s a market accelerating. “But prices are falling…” Context matters. Used car prices exploded during COVID by up to 30%. What we’re seeing now is a normal correction as supply returns. EVs corrected faster because: • The market is newer. • A wave of incentivised ex-fleet cars hits at once. CAP HPI & Cox Automotive now show prices stabilising Residual values are also nowhere near as bad as people claim: • EVs: ~58–62% after 3 years • Petrol/Diesel: ~60–65% That gap is tiny, and closing. The EV industry overall is still very young. Most EVs on UK roads are under 5 years old. Petrol cars? Many are 10–15+ years old. So of course used EV supply looks smaller… It hasn’t had time to build yet. What you’re seeing now is exactly how every new car market develops: 1. Fleets adopt first. 2. Cars come back after 3–4 years. 3. Used market grows. 4. Prices stabilise. 5. Mass adoption follows. We are still at the start of that transition. It’s still very early.
