@Joanna__Hardy 1891 was a census year. Probably won’t even get to balance of probability but if your house was built in 1891, and you know who lived there in 1891 from the census, and assuming the coin has been in there since…. You could track the following census to find who it didn’t fall on

Had a ceiling come down in my home (don’t ask) & found this lucky penny🥹 I’m such a geek - but I love wondering who this belonged to in 1891. What were they going to buy? When did they drop it? Any Twitter Historians left? Would love to know what else I should be looking for.

If you’re interested in the Battle for Walcheren in 1944, the strategic situation and particularly the role played by the Royal Marines… George Gelder’s presentation to the Royal Marines Historical Society has just gone live on YouTube youtu.be/QBQ8uFE1Eso

@SeaSpitfires Your chances of finding a copy for sale are pretty low… but Heather at NMRN says they have a copy in the library…

I know it’s unlikely, but does anyone have a copy of Turning the Key by Paul Crucq they’d like to sell?

Obviously the book pile for this venture is considerably smaller than for a book about Normandy. If anyone knows of any memoirs from people who served at Walcheren on land, sea or air, that I really should have, please let me know!

As I tweeted my way through my last book – the discoveries, the details, the highs, the lows – I shall continue in the same vein for what may be my second. No contract yet so this is very much the start, but I'm working on a proposal for... Operation Infatuate and Walcheren.

Ominously there are no survivor statements from the other 3 craft though, and almost certainly at least LCG(M) 102 was lost with all hands. More digging is needed. But it's a salient reminder that even I can be misled, as demonstrated here! youtube.com/live/cE7j8hhZB…

As far as I can see, this horrifying stat is first suggested by Admiral Pugsley (commander of the naval forces) in his 1957 memoir. It has since been repeated in almost every book I have about Walcheren, although @AndrewRawson11's is a pleasing exception.

I was gobsmacked to see so many of you, and even more so when the line around the courtyard for book signings kept growing (I was there for 1 hour 50 mins!). Here's what I know was everyone's favourite part.

@Taff_Gillingham That collection is a pretty good record of how the Royal Marines reorganised in 1943… your man seems to have started in MNBDO II, qualified as a signaller, when manpower was needed for landing craft the MNBDO was largely disbanded and lots of the men transferred to assault…

Here is a Royal Marines quiz for my Royal Navy-minded followers: I already know the answer, but I’d never come across this before, so I thought the Bootneck fans among you would appreciate it. Which WW2 Royal Marines wore a blue tombstone behind their cap badge instead of red?

Not with Royal Marines Commandos, over 10,000 Royals served in the invasion as Landing Craft crew… IWM have the photos that Wright took during the operation, they were both on an LCG.

So no @USMC Marines took part in D-Day I hear you say? Well who would like to read the diary of them landing on Sword Beach with the @RoyalMarines Commandos?

@TJGodden Don is a delightful guy, hasn’t been in touch with too many others since he was demobbed in 1946, 558 Flotilla got the North Shore Regiment ashore at St Aubyn in face of difficult opposition, all nine of their first wave of assault landing craft got off the beach safely

from a completely different period in history or subject…. too close and you’ll start to relate everything to your book and what you could have done differently….

So now that I’ve finished #NormandySailors #DDay reading for a while I’ve challenged myself to read some books which have been on my shelves for FAR too long without being read cover to cover. These were the first. It’s been an extraordinary, illuminating but grueling journey.
