How to identify AI-written text: a brief case study. The post below has over 1M views and has garnered massive praise for its writing. So you may be surprised to learn it is *entirely* written by AI. It has all the classic signs: 🔴 First, the telltale syncopation where it stutters out a statement through increasingly bombastic restatement using sentence fragments. These fragments are highlighted in red. 🟡 Next, overbearing use of metaphor in every element of the writing. This generally goes well beyond what any human would naturally use. It is an extremely "try hard" way to illustrate an idea so you rarely see real humans go to such lengths (especially for an 𝕏 reply) but it is textbook for AI writing. I highlighted some of the most overt and trite uses of metaphor in yellow, once again used to pile on emphasis. 🟢 Then of course the "It wasn't A, it was B" setup in which the "B" includes essentially a fractal of both previous heuristics–functioning as both a bombastic restatement and also a metaphor. These setups are extremely common in AI writing–both in overt instances like the first one highlighted as well as more covert "embedded" examples like those later on in the post when its talking about what it is framing as discord in perception. 🔵 And the grandaddy of them all, the "emdash parenthetical" which the poster here left in structurally but replaced the emdashes with ellipses to hide their tracks. These examples are highlighted in blue. This was just a quick pass; I'm sure I could get more granular, but this at least illustrates the most obvious things to look for to identify if writing is authentic or not. Overall, I think the only authentic part of the post below is the first sentence. Let me know if you notice something I missed.

I've never felt this much behind as a programmer. The profession is being dramatically refactored as the bits contributed by the programmer are increasingly sparse and between. I have a sense that I could be 10X more powerful if I just properly string together what has become available over the last ~year and a failure to claim the boost feels decidedly like skill issue. There's a new programmable layer of abstraction to master (in addition to the usual layers below) involving agents, subagents, their prompts, contexts, memory, modes, permissions, tools, plugins, skills, hooks, MCP, LSP, slash commands, workflows, IDE integrations, and a need to build an all-encompassing mental model for strengths and pitfalls of fundamentally stochastic, fallible, unintelligible and changing entities suddenly intermingled with what used to be good old fashioned engineering. Clearly some powerful alien tool was handed around except it comes with no manual and everyone has to figure out how to hold it and operate it, while the resulting magnitude 9 earthquake is rocking the profession. Roll up your sleeves to not fall behind.
