@SGriffin_Lab @chrischirp My sister died of polio in 1950 just five years before Salk's vaccine a year before I was born. My father never really recovered from his grief. I think about what he would have said to any anti vaxer.

Such a sad state of affairs... Please protect your child with a #MMR vaccine, and in so doing, protect others, including u1's that can't have it yet. No, MMR does NOT cause autism. Measles can kill. The antivax movement should hang its head in shame. bbc.com/news/articles/…

@Bonn1eGreer He's trying to play the victim now. No forgiveness until he makes amends, viz John Profumo. Let's be rid of the whole rotten lot.

Govt's last shred of moral authority in tackling #climateemergency has been obliterated. Our cowardly Climate Minister has walked away from #COP28 negotiations at the most critical moment, because the PM wants him to vote for his immoral Rwanda Deal in order to save his own skin.

@NickCohen4 I have pensions paying me £32k. My wife has a £22k pension from the UN. A guaranteed income of £54k. She will not be able to get a spousal vise. Someone earning £39k can get a spousal visa for someone earning nothing, and even lose their job the next day. Performative cruelty.

We have gone from EU membership, where we could marry any European we pleased and live with them where we wished, to the Conservatives smashing up our families and ordering partners to leave the country. Brexit has been a huge blow to our freedom.
Migration Observatory@MigObs

Our analysis on how the newly announced salary thresholds stand to affect both migrants and UK residents has some interesting observations. migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/comm… also published on @UKandEU

Since UK has gone from a country whose citizens could live all over Europe to one where only the richest can afford to live in their own country with their own spouses. I struggle to see that as progress

@Dr_D_Robertson @chrischirp An example of the commodified view of knowledge and education. Such a depaupurate view at a time when multidisciplinary methods are becoming essential. Such ignorance is depressing.

One of the things about being in a university is that you are surrounded by very bright people with diverse educational backgrounds. That's how knowledge is created. And impact made. And value created. Shutting down humanities degrees, as with shutting down libraries, isn't good.
Ben Ansell@benwansell

As a quantitative social scientist at @NuffieldCollege, I heartily oppose this very limited, pernicious argument. There is room in our world for many ways of thinking. And not every degree or job should be valued by its earnings potential. Oh, and FWIW I was a history grad.

@redhistorian @david_colquhoun The culture of deference is still strong among the British middle classes. The upper class, or faux upper class in the case of Johnson and Mogg, benefit from an almost inate acceptance of hierarchical authority, with little critical analysis of any real ability.

I agree with Anthony Seldon about the damage Boris Johnson has done and his unfitness for public office. But there's a question he doesn't address here, which needs more attention. It troubled me about his book, too. So let me try to explain... 🧵 thetimes.co.uk/article/boris-…

@AdamRutherford Sailing back from N.Brittany to Cornwall, maybe 30 years ago, we passed through maybe ten miles of these covering the water as far as the eye could see. An unforgettable experience.

Nurses are under attack. The government have decided they will take them on and break them if needed They are the same people who kept this nation going through the pandemic They are the backbone of society RT if you stand right behind them and will back them whatever it takes

@HeleneBismarck @anneapplebaum Thank you for this. Just read the chapter on the last days pre WWI. Excellent writing and much to think about. I love his European vision. Cooperation, collaboration, mutual aid, cultural celebration. The EU, despite its flaws, stands for this. How could we throw all that away.

Number one requirement for anyone working with our livestock is are they steady, calm and sensible I wouldn’t have anyone rough or who is gung-ho and racing about… my grandad was obsessed with thinking through a job first to do it the best way, and I try to be the same

Amazed how much stressy behaviour I see online among sheep - At our place you do it calm and steady and no stress, or you’re sacked Walk tup in to the corner of a field among the ewes and gently get hold and apply raddle whilst having a bite of feed I hate stressy shepherding

As a public servant Mark Carney declines to offer a 'value judgement' on Brexit. He's happy to give a neutral valuation though: “Put it this way, in 2016 the British economy was 90 per cent the size of Germany’s. Now it is less than 70 per cent." Boom. ft.com/content/f1f0a6…

The court case trying to block 5-11 year olds from getting vaccinated against covid, launched by Bev Turner and the HART front group "Children's Covid Vaccine Advisory Council", has been thrown out and judged as "totally without merit". And they owe DHSC £14,683 in defence costs.

@_johnbye @dgurdasani1 That's good news. I live in Uruguay and there is currently a judicial ruling to prevent vaccination of 5-11 year old on the grounds that people don't know the exact make up of the Pfizer vaccination. The anti vaxers were literally dancing in the street. It seems to have been a...
